NPR Wrestles With Strong Bad
NPR’s John Ydstie reported on the Brothers Chaps this
weekend, delivering a report titled ‘Strong Bad Walks in Footsteps of Darth, Lex, J.R.’ The gist of the piece, which can be streamed here, focuses on how Strong Bad, the bad guy in the Homestar Runner universe, has emerged as the most popular character. Both Mike and Matt Chapman are feature in the broadcast, and not much new is learned that hasn’t already been covered in various articles, including one I posted a while back. There is some discussion on how the Homestar Runner fanbase is getting younger. A 13-year old named Brian explains that he likes Strong Bad and the other Flash shorts on the site because it’s “so zany and so funny and so random.” You pretty much nailed it, Brian.
Matt explains the benefits of producing web-shorts over
television with an example of how he and his brother could re-tool a short the morning they’re launching. The ‘South Park’ gang can reportedly rework an episode from front to back in a matter of days, but new segments surely can’t be inserted the same day as they go live. It’s worth noting that the Brothers Chaps, unlike Matt and Trey, are producing hip, edgy, work without the FCC looming over their shoulders – and it’s all PG. Go figure.
