Flinch Gets Smashed on Pepsi
Flinch Studio has been at the Flash-animation game as long as anyone.
They knew their way around Future Splash, the precursor to what we now call Macromedia Adobe Flash. That helped Flinch ride through the heyday of the dotcom boom, and they’ve since relocated to Florida (as if Santa Monica wasn’t sunny enough).
Since then, their production model has changed a bit, as Flinch has “been focusing more on Creative, Boards, Audio and Post-Production, while outsourcing most of the Animation to various individuals and companies,” according to Tony Grillo. But this shift hasn’t changed the number of big jobs Flinch tends to land.
Take, for instance, their recent work for Pepsi.
Tony teamed up with Fatkat Animation Studios to produce a handful of Flash-animated shorts for Pepsi’s ‘Popped Culture Theater’ campaign on Yahoo Music. It all falls under the Pepsi Smash campaign, which began on the WB Network, and then moved over to Yahoo’s web domain. Check out their Madonna short that takes a humorous look at how she came to be such a huge star. And the Ice Cube short follows his rise out of N.W.A to his hugely successful solo career.
Flinch also produced a holiday spot for Pepsi, which was built in “Flash and Lightwave, composited in After Effects, and edited with Avid Express DV,” according to Grillo. Hats off to both Flinch and Fatkat.

That was the first time I’ve seen “Adobe Flash” written out. I am both frightened and exhilarated at the thought of it.
