Dave Logan Plugging Along

posted by admin, 4.02 PM

Dave Logan has built a batch of 7 plugins and is now sharing them with us for free, including:

SkipAround - Allows fast key-based scrolling through the timeline.

FocusLayer - Locks all layers but the one you’re on.

ViewLayer - Hides all but the layer your cursor is on.

Head over to his site to see the rest.

Dave Wolfe, Freedom Lover is tipping a cyber 40 in your honor- thank you for these amazing Plug Ins!

  2. Dave Logan Says:

No offense to Mr. Wolfe (I love his extensions), but I made these ones, haha. Dave Wolf, Dave Logan, too many Daves! :)
I mostly wanted to comment to say I fixed the incompatability problem with Flash MX 2004 and Enter Graphic at Current Frame (it was only working with Flash 8 before). If you use Warren Fuller’s amazing AnimSlider plugin, the Enter Graphic at Current Frame is pretty darn useful.
Thanks for the plug Aaron! I hope you guys find these useful and if you have any other ideas for extensions let me know!

  3. Dave Wolfe Says:

You got the wrong guy Aaron! That’s Dave Logan. I do have more plugins that are going up later today though, I just need to finish the html :)

Cool plugins Mr. Logan, I was going to make a skiparound plugin this weekend but you’ve saved me the trouble :)

G1, Dave Logan! Wow, you picked up JSFL fast!

I look forward to using these, especially your Squash & Stretch tool.

  5. Aaron Simpson Says:

Does anyone know of an extension, that creates outlines around symbols? And i can choose the color outline i want? That would be a great extension. Another great extension would be some sort of beinging tool. The envelope is hard to use cause of all the points. I want something where you select it, and then you shoose the tool and you can easily bend shapes like you can bend lines. Does anyone know of any such things or are able to invent that?? -Steve

  9. Dave Logan Says:

Those would be kind of hard to do, at least for me. You could probably make a command that enters the symbol and applies a stroke to the geometry, but not one to the symbol itself. As for the other one I don’t know if that’s possible with JSFL yet. I hope in Flash 9 they extend JSFL’s power to make it more like MEL for Maya, but I don’t know how feasible that is.
By the way, I just found out from Dave Wolfe’s excellent LAFlash presentation that my View Layer and Focus Layer extensions are redundant, you get the same effect if you Alt-click the visible icon or the lock icon. Oh well, that’s easier than an awkward keyboard combo, haha. Once they post the presentations, check them out, they were all very interesting and informative.

  10. Anonymous Says:

does anybody know if there’s a plugin that creates a keyframe on all the layers at the same frame?
if not, can any of the Daves (or someone else) create such a plugin? that would really be helpful

  11. Dave Logan Says:

    Anonymous, Here you go.

  12. Sandro Corsaro Says:

    Nice work, DL.

  13. Stephen Levinson Says:

Does anyone know how i can “a command that enters the symbol and applies a stroke to the geometry” Also, does any of the Daves or anyone else know is theres a command or actionscipt or extension that converst lines to fill? -Steve

  14. Anonymous Says:

    thanks dave!!!!

that would really come in handy

  15. Dave Wolfe Says:

Stephen: Convert lines to fills is a command built into Flash. Modify->Shape->convert lines to fills.

  16. Stephen Levinson Says:

    Thanks Dave Wolfe!

Dave Logan, that “Key All Layers” Is it suppost to create a keyframe or frame on every layer on the selected frame? If not do you know of such. Btw what programs are you guys using to make these. I appreciate all your guys help!

    Steve

  17. Stephen Levinson Says:

Id like to fix what i wrote. In flash, i have to put my mouse on the frame and then scroll down threw the layers to the very bottom and hit insert a frame or keyframe, which is a pain. Is there a plugin, that ( being on any layer) will insert a keyframe or frame on every layer at that frame number?

Sorry I wasnt clear in the earlier message.
    Steve

  18. Dave Logan Says:

Stephen, yep, that’s what the Key All Layers command I wrote for Anonymous does.

  19. Stephen Levinson Says:

Hey Dave ( Logan). Sorry to bother you again. How do i use the
key all layers? I have a symbol and each item is on a
different layer and there is only 1 frame in the
symbol. I click on the 5th frame and then i click key
all layers and nothing happens. Then i tried inserting
a frame on the 5th frame and with the 5th frame
selected i click key all layers and then i get “At
line18 of file “Key All Layers”: Type Error:
frameArray[curFrame] has no properties” im not sure
what it means but then it inserts a keyframe on frame
5 only on the layer i had the 5 frames on. Im really
sorry to bother you, but it doesnt seem to be working
for me. Thanks for all your help!

    Steve

  20. Dave Logan Says:

I was assuming there were blank frames where the user wanted to key them all. Thanks for letting me know, I fixed it, and it’s a much more useful command now!

  21. Jake T Says:

Dave Logan, that Key All Layers thing is great! You got a sequel to that called “Frame All Layers” ? Instead of it adding keyframes on all layers, it’ll add frames on all layers. Do you think you could make it if it doesnt exist?

  22. Dave Logan Says:

Sure thing Jake: Frame All Layers.
I also updated Key All Layers so you can select frames beyond the legnth of any of your layers.

  23. Stephen Levinson Says:

Dave Logan, I figured out how to make outlines around symbols. I feel so smart! lol -Steve

  24. Marc Manalli Says:

Hi! I’ve found you’re extensions very useful. I’m amazed at how much easier flash is using them.

I wanted to suggest a plugin if you weren’t already working on this one. I need to import a large number of image sequences into the main timeline and have it key frame every 5 frames for a specific frame rate. Normally I’d just change the FPS itself but this swf has to reside in another swf with an established FPS so the the new swf must be the same.
Essentially I’m trying to save time and finger clicking and not have to manually go in and add frames for every keyframe of images.

If there’s a work around instead of a plugin I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks-Marc
