Sam Chi’s Elaborate Critique

According to one of his friends, Sam Chi, an alumni of SCAD, loves animation so much, he used to sleep at the school building overnight, living off “ketchup and salt packets.”

That passion comes out loud and clear in his Flash-animated short ‘A Little Critique.’ It’s an elaborately animated short, filled with complex human movement and subtle touches. Sam is member of the CHF community, and he posted that he approached this short “the same as I would with traditional 2d animation. The process taught me a lot of new things about Flash animation. And it was fun, too.” If you scroll further through the thread, Sam elaborates on his process.

You can see his traditional-chops at work in a short featuring the same baseball-cap wearing girl over on his website.

After spending some time at Turner Studios in Atlanta on ‘Harvey Birdman,’ Sam landed at Cartoon Network in Los Angeles, working on ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.’

    Man I’m liking this piece.

He really made some beautiful animation, great head turns and acting too – playing on the pros and cons of flash – with wide shots and close ups chosen carefully.

    awesome work!

I had the pleasure of meeting Sam right before I graduated. I kept hearing about this crazy talented guy who was taking Larry Lauria’s Intro to 2D Animation class. Eventually I was able to see Sam’s work… and was quickly blown away. Needless to say it’s fantastic to hear of his success. Beautiful film Sam! Congrats!
