Flash Storyboards on La Lucha
As reported back in June,
the duo behind ‘Mucha Lucha,’ Eddie Mort and Lili Chin, are currently in producion on a Flash-animated feature - ‘Los Campeones de La Lucha.’
Eddie recently uploaded some storyboard examples from the production over on his blog. The unique thing here is that he’s using Flash to create the storyboard panels. He says:
The advantage is that I get to make the storyboards more like mini-layouts, and also get to use existing character models. It’s a more time consuming process, but I figure it will make for a better animatic, and really make things easier for animators when it comes time for that stage of the production. Anyone else use this method?
See more over at the Fwak blog and in the CHF message boards.

This is a great idea! I’ve always wanted to try this technique. It’s good to know that it works in actual production and is more than just a theory. Thanks for sharing!
I really like the look and style of this film as well!

Here at Fatkat this technique we use quite a bit for web type shows or what we call “3/4 front” shows.
Where the 3/4 views of the characters are the only views that you’ll ever see of them.
Once the voice tracks are recorded and the props and backgrounds are done, you can assemble your entire show in flash to the script. WHO NEEDS STORYBOARDS!? - just do it on the fly, submit the animatic, revise, retake, redo whatever.
This technique is a must when dealing with AD Agencies in my mind because many lack the vision of the end product or just have a hard time seeing the show through shotty boards and rough drawings.
It also means more time spent on the technicals of boarding but shit, when you’re done, your animators can just sit down and animate!
Efficient!!

I’ve been promoting this method of boarding to producers for a while now. It seems to make perfect sense to me.

I’m the co-director of the series ‘The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers’ and we have used flash for the entire production from design through to boards, animatics and animation.
Although an adjustment for old school board artists (like myself),cintiq’s definately helped the transition.
Since the show is a co-production between Canada and the UK, the pipeline is quick and painless. We just send the boards back and forth for approvals and revisions, etc.
Although the actual boarding stage may take longer than traditional methods, much time is saved in other areas. Essentially, it becomes a saw-off.

Todd and I at Neptoon Studios do all of our own work with Flash storyboards. I built a clever little template (if I do say so myself) about 6 years ago and it’s come in very handy. Our setup allows us to cut our own animatics and sceneplan everything all in one. When I finish adding my custom built bells and whistles it’ll be an even better addition to our toolbox.
Who wants to buy one?
