Knox Makes The Animation Rain
Bruce Knox, a 2D animator and painter, has produced an unofficial music video for Make it Rain, a track on Tom Waits’ 2004 album Real Gone. According to Knox, Waits’ watched the Flash-animated video below and approves. This homage to Waits’ music is what Knox says “gets me through the shit in my life.”
Knox has spent the last 8 years as a 2D animator in both New Zealand and Japan, and he also produces a great deal of paintings. The material in his shows is darker than some readers may have the stomach for (100 pages of the word “kill“), but his grim, often-violent sensibility is exactly the type of free expression the web can help serve.

3 years ago at the beginning of a classical animation course, Bruce Knox was introduced to us as a guest speaker from “The Industry”. This was one of our first forays with someone who was out there and doing what we hoped to one day be doing. His speech began…
What followed was a No-Holds-Barred, violently brutal truthfulness about the world we wanted to enter. We got the perks, perils and pitfalls of animation illustrated to us in Knox’ vibrantly colourful language.
He told us exactly what a newcomer should be told when embarking on a new venture. And it is definitely a speech I am glad to have heard.
PS: I am particularly glad to have heard his talk as it was deemed to be too colourful (and honest)for new animation students and the following talks he gave were toned downed to a murky sepia.
