Bennicke Draws Inspiration From Monty Python

posted by aaron, 6.10 PM

Rune Bennicke has joined the ranks of Adam Phillips, Bernard Derriman and Phil Nibbelink - Disney Feature animators who’ve discovered Flash animation. What artists of this caliber typically realize is that Flash can serve as an ink-and-paint program. Both Derriman and Phillips utilize the re-use functionality Flash allows, but Bennicke has done fine without it. Below this Brazilian animator draws “straight ahead” in a re-enactment of 20-seconds from Monty Python’s Bookshop sketch, featuring the voices of John Cleese and Graham Chapman.

I really don’t understand the statement “What artists of this caliber typically realize is that Flash can serve as an ink-and-paint program.”
I’m reading a lot of things into this statement and don’t want to put words into your mouth.
    Can you elaborate?

snare - artists who’ve labored for years in the traditional animation realm often seem to utilize Flash more for traditional-style shorts and less for the cut-out style projects that are more typically seen emanating from the software. i was painting with a broad brush (forgive the pun) with that statement, but i think you get the idea: these artists do what they know, and naturally gravitate towards drawing on 2’s. they’re not alone - hundreds of artists use Flash for traditional work, but i don’t think you’d argue with me when i say that Flash is more typically used for puppet-based work, right?

  4. Stickman Says:

Nice animation. I think flash works for both techniques.

The acting is sooo good. I don’t think people understand how difficult this is to pull off with just dialogue.

    the secondary action perfect!

Great animation and for fun at that.

Rune is one of the nicest and most talented people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Good work Rune. Awesome job!

Obviously this is sumptuous, and I really like the Cleese shopkeeper character but am I alone in thinking the Chapman character may be a little over the top?

  11. 11 Second Club Short By Bennicke | Cold Hard Flash: Flash Animation News, Videos and Links Says:

[...] Back in January of this year, we pointed you to some straight-ahead Flash-animation by Rune Bennicke. He’s since posted another go at it, this time using Joe Mantegna’s dialog from the 1993 film Searching for Bobby Fischer. He intended this reenactment for the 11 Second Club, but never finished the piece. We wish our finished animation looked half as good as Rune’s unfinished work. [...]
