Renmotion Drops Dirk Breaka on Nick Australia

posted by aaron, 9.57 AM

For Nickelodeon Australia, Renmotion has animated this short below, titled Dirk Breaka. The voice of Dirk was performed by Australian comedian Shaun Micallef. It’s quite a unique look that the Renmotion team has cooked up. According to Suren Perera, the director/writer/producer, they used a mixture of symbol tweening and frame-by-frame techniques within Flash 9.

Wow! That was strange. The animation was great. I can see how they did the squigglevision effect. I liked the “Home Movies” feel, but the story was strange. The whole “hip hop” thing seemed a little forced and un-natural. They should hire real rappers to 16 bars for them so that the rhymes are good. That would have made the overall animation more polished.

The writing was funny and the abstract style was consistent throughout but it moved a little too slow for me. Had it not been for CHF… I would not have watched the entire thing. IMO… it should move faster. The jokes would be funnier.

I liked this cartoon. The mix between frame by frame and tweening is very good. I wish Nick here in the states showed shorts like this…or do they? I wouldn’t really know, I don’t get to watch the tele anymore these days.

Well, I quite agree that this short should move a little faster.
But that`s not too important with such great animation and great character design.
I really enjoy to see in this site flash animations that don`t rely much in the auto tweens from flash, and this one is a good example of good flash animation.

Looked great. Very original look. I like the purple outlines and the character designs overall. Is it just me or is the hero very woody allen-ey?
