NBC Pulls Rabbit Out of Nelvana’s Hat
With the olympics taking over my life these last few weeks, my TV has been pinned to NBC here in the states. So while watching their qubo block, I stumbled onto a new 2D digital series that I assumed was produced in Flash. My Friend Rabbit, which is based on the Caldecott Gold Medal winning book series created by Eric Rohmann, is actually produced in Toon Boom at 9 Story Entertainment by way of Nelvana. Artists like Jason and Julie Faulkner have been working on the series which recently got a positive review from Pete Emslie (Why is this important? Emslie has thumbed his nose at digital 2D in the past).

My one and only complaint with Rabbit is the inconsistent line work. Mouths and facial features are nicely tapered and fully animated, but the body features tend to suffer from ‘Flash line’, round-capped and unweighted. Still, it’s a nitpick. Character designs are freakin’ adorable, animation is nice n’ bouncy and overall the production is very polished. Incidentally, some great voicework in this series too, especially from the actor voicing Mouse.
