Soup2Nuts Reveals New Mythology

posted by aaron, 5.48 AM

You may know Soup2Nuts as the masters of “Squigglevision,” the animation effect used on shows like Dr. Katz and Home Movies (the production eventually switched to Flash), but their range extends far beyond this patented technique. We’ve featured their more recent work on projects like Wordgirl and Between the Lions, and this new original series below further illustrates their varied palette. It’s a :30 teaser for Mount Olympus Prep, a new animated series concept created and directed by Mike Annear. The show follows the lives of teen Greek gods learning to use their powers and cope with life in Junior High. Mike Nordstrom provided the storyboards, Dan Flynn the animation and Evan Sussman the After Effects. The project was developed and produced by David Trexler.

There was another pitch for another Flash show (from a studio I can’t remember) that had various beasts from world mythology portrayed as high school teens. I had at first thought this show was the same one- I suppose I was wrong.

Your thinking about Mythunderstood by Atomic.

  3. Pierre Says:

Magic Iron Mike Annear kills it once again! Kudos champ!!!!

  4. Allison Says:

Mike and soup2nutters! Very cool!! Can’t wait to see more. :)

  5. Stephen M. Levinson Says:

ehh the designs and animation look weak.

  6. Liam Says:

Animation looks amazo-tastic! Mike A. and Dan, you guys are KINGS!

  7. Dave Schlafman Says:

    Steve-

I think you were off-base without describing why the animation and design stinks. What about it looks weak? I really like the visuals, especially the backgrounds and the shot with Medusa…very cool. I know this trailer lives somewhere as a two-minute short that the “development person” decided to cut into a trailer. Maybe someday we can see the short! Great job Mike and co.

  8. Stephen M. Levinson Says:

Dave- You’re right, I should elaborate.

The designs of the characters look very 2D and flat, the characters don’t seem to pop. The black outline with the rounded edges give it a very flashy look to it as well… As far as animation goes, I’m not too impressed, it looks as if it was animated in flash. It doesn’t set any new standards, looks like the same old type of animation I’ve seen that make me enjoy work from Boulder and Fosters much better. Lastly, I think the shots are way too close up on the characters, seems a little too crowded.

The beginning shot was beautiful though with the clouds and such.

  9. Bob Farcle Says:

I disagree Negative Steve. I think the character design is pretty strong on some of the characters
(Medusa and the bull from the stillshot) and yes it looks like it was animated in flash but if you somehow didnt notice this website is called Cold hard FLASH… Plenty of great shows are produced in flash these days (if you keep up with the indusrty at all you would know this…). Anyway its good to see what competition is out there for new shows. cheers to CHF!

  10. Stephen M. Levinson Says:

    Bob,

I keep up with the industry to the extreme and am a huge flash advocate. When I say that looks like it’s made in flash, I mean it looks like typical and flashy flash animation, not the good kind like fosters or el tigre.. It’s almost as bad as animation collective work . Of course this is cold hard flash but if you look at fosters it doesn’t look so obvious that it’s made in flash. Also Foster designs are well designed and dimensional, my little brother could have made these designs.

  11. Joe Corrao Says:

Nice job…hooray for all Flash development!

  12. Michael Says:

I liked it. I think it’s a clever concept. The characters have a nice quality to them.

on a different note, I’d like to see some of the drawings that Stephen’s little brother does. ;O)

  13. Henry Winkler Says:

    Steve –

Everyone thinks Fosters and El Tigre (canceled) are great flash animated series. That’s no reason to crap on other artists styles/ effort.

All – if you haven’t already, PLEASE please check out Steve’s portfolio. It’s everything he hates about 2D Flash design and more.

Let me know if I got this right Steve – You’re one of those kids that says he’s a “studio” when really it’s you trying to animate in your mom’s dank basement next to the washing machine.

My advice would be to spend less time posting negative comments and more on your Flash skills.

  14. Stephen M. Levinson Says:

I have the right to an opinion, “Mr.Winkler” aka anonymous afraid to post his name.

I’m going to be the bigger man here, so have a nice day.

    Best,
    Steve

FYI, it was next to the drier, not washing machine ;-)

  15. Henry Winkler Says:

Sadly Henry Winkler is my real name. It’s a gift and a curse.

You can have your opinion but you don’t need to shit on other people. Unless it’s constructive, keep it to yourself.

  16. Michael Says:

Stephen, nobody is saying you can’t have an opinion, everybody does. Critiquing others work is how we grow and see things we need to work on. I just think it’s the way you go about doing it, that’s all.

Now I’ve spoken to you in the past through emails and you know that I respect what you do so I don’t say this to be mean, but it seems to me that before you make comments about how someone’s work isn’t breaking new ground in Flash animation or something looks like typical Flash, then your own personal work should back up your statements. I visit your site from time to time and I like what I see, but it screams Flash and it’s not breaking new ground either.

I’m all for sharing opinions and hearing from others what I need to improve on but I think it needs to be done with some maturity. Not with comments like I’ve seen better or my little brother could do better.

Hey man, let’s try and find the positive in someone’s work and help each other to become better animators.

  17. Stephen M. Levinson Says:

Since I’m being attacked from every angle, I’m not going to bother defending myself but to say that I feel my quality of work is above this so I don’t feel I’m completely out of bounds, but I’ll just leave it at giving better critique next time. Can we end this already and wait for people to talk about this post than attack me?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  18. Michael Says:

Stephen, it’s not an attack. But thanks for proving my point.

    It’s all good. :)
