Flash Animators Invited to New Whirled
The gang at Three Rings Design (Puzzle Pirates), has launched a new web-based Flash gaming environment. News like this wouldn’t typically find it’s way to ColdHardFlash, but Whirled, which has been described as “Flash Second Life,” invites animators to upload their creations in the form of avatars and games. My pal Bill Robinson was amongst the artists who helped design what you’ll see in Whirled, and he just passed along this Flash-animated video directed and animated by Brittney Lee that promotes the launch.

I just checked it out. My first impression was that load times and frame-rates were very slow – it’s ironic that moving so many vectors in 2D is actually more difficult than 3D polygons in “Second Life”.
I’d strongly recommend that they look at frame rate issues – file size limitations on avatars would be a good step to take. The two custom avatars that I saw used lines instead of fills – this is a HUGE no-no … lines animate very poorly in Flash for some reason.
It’s a great idea; I’ll check back in later and see if there’s any developments. I’d really like to try a couple of avatars.

Whirled does require a pretty fast internet connection because of the massive amounts of content. Three Rings does not put limitations on file size, but we do provide guidelines for avatar creation – these should probably include a section on optimization and speed. Thanks!
