On-Air El Tigre Storyboard Pitch

Okay, Sean Szeles is officially the Flash artist of the week. In his second appearance on CHF in five days, Sean stars in an on-air El Tigre promo on Nickelodeon. Sean wrote up the experience over on his blog, and below you can see the :30 assembly of a storyboard pitch he led in front of his team. Keep your eyes peeled for show creators Jorge Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua in the clip along with other El Tigre team members like Gabe Swarr.

Jobling and Culbard Team Up On Beatniks

Curtis Jobling, a British illustrator and animator, has teamed up with fellow countryman I. N. J. Culbard to bring Biteneck Beatniks to life. This original series concept created by Jobling did a lap around the MIPCOM floor earlier this year, and is currently aiming towards a full pilot. The two brought in Luc Chamberland and Sardine Productions team to create this 2-minute animated teaser below.

Cold Hard Flashback: Fog Eyes

A good year before Cold Hard Flash came into existence, Australian filmmaker Hamish Koci’s Fog Eyes had screened at all the major animation festivals – including Annecy and Ottawa. This 6-minute student film takes on the subjects of religious zealotry and euthanasia, and its apparent that Koci didn’t make use of Flash’s potential for limited animation. With a high drawing count and a rhyming narrative, this traditionally-animated short from 2003 is charming and provides a thoughtful perspective on a complex and controversial topic.

Hamish assembled an interesting lip sync tutorial for Australia’s ABC website. Koci has since worked on Flash-animated series, including The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers.

Szeles Pluses El Tigre Sequence

Sean Szeles, an animator on El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, has posted a sequence from the episode Yellow Pantera, which premiered this past summer. Before an episode is sent to the animation studio, Szeles is given the the green light to embellish several shots with partial or full animation. You can read more about his Flash-animation process in a post from March of this year.

New York City in Motion

For their latest tourism spot, New York City turned to a British advertising agency and an LA-based studio. The result is This is New York City, a 60 second live-action spot with animated elements that all bring the city to life in an entirely new way. Motion Theory directors Mathew Cullen and Jesus de Francisco employed Flash, After Effects and Maya in the production pipeline, and Ella Fitzgerald’s Take the A-Train as the music bed.

Zombies Invite You to Star in JibJab’s Latest

Not surprisingly, JibJab’s Halloween humor is politically-skewed this year. The California-based Flash animation team has released two new Starring You shorts, which allow users to upload their own photos – essentially ‘casting’ the short. Both sides of the beltway aisle have something to laugh at here with two zombie-themed shorts – Night of the Living Democrats or Night of the Living Republicans. I’ve chosen to cast felines again, and have titled this one Night of the Living Demo-cats.

VanGaalen Animates For Holy F*ck

Chad VanGaalen is a musician from Calgary, Alberta, but his artistic talent doesn’t stop there. As discussed here at CHF about a year ago, VanGaalen is an illustrator who designs his own cover art and animates his music videos. His latest animation, however, is for another band – Holy F*ck. It appears as if this is Flash-animation mixed with stop-motion – and the track is titled Milkshake.

Dan & Jason Zombify The Cribs

Hornet Inc. animation duo Dan & Jason give us an early Halloween treat with their latest animated project for the band The Cribs. Do You Wana Be Relevant is the new Flash-animated music video off the this UK band’s summer 2007 release Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, and it features animated likenesses of the band slowly turning to zombies. Dan and Jason had animation help from Simon Ampel and Markus Wagner.
