ZZZ Collective Scores 2011 GRAPHIC Prize

Three artists in Sydney have banded together to form the ZZZ Collective, and they’ve already notched a victory. Their short, Run Amok, won the top prize at the 2011 GRAPHIC Animation Competition, an element of the GRAPHIC 2011 festival at Sydney Opera House. The team used Flash and After Effects in the production pipeline. Congrats, fellas!

Alexander Vasilkin’s animation competition website, ADAsport.com, has released a new Flash-animated short written by Rick Louis and directed by Gene Fowler at Loogaroo. It’s titled A Modern Day Cinderella Tale, and its up against an animated iPhone commerical parody. The winner of the competition is determined by who receives the most likes on YouTube.

French Animators Take Ice Cream Road to Annecy

Ice Cream Road is a 5-minute film directed by Frenchmen David Decobert, Thomas Fourniret and Jean-Philippe Florin for the Annecy 2011 YouTube Contest. The theme this year is Animation, Land of Freedom, and artists are encouraged to include a reference to the USA, who are the 2011 guest country. I think this one has a strong chance at taking the top prize:

Frequenters of CHF may have already clicked on one of the Amazon Studios banners now displaying throughout the site. We’re proud to help promote this new, ongoing contest, which is giving out some rather chunky awards each and every month. Contests are often underwhelming in scope and payoff – asking for much and giving back little. You can’t throw Amazon Studios in that bucket. They’re putting BIG money up for grabs – to the tune of $2.7 million dollars in 2011. On top of that, they’ve teamed up with Warner Bros. for a first-look development deal, with the goal of getting theatrical distribution for the films that emerge from this effort.

While these monthly contests are open to filmmakers of all stripes, I believe animators have a big advantage here. As most of you know, a single animator equipped with software like Flash or Toon Boom can create vast amounts of output, while live-action filmmakers often need lots of help putting their project together. All that aside, Amazon Studios is about collaboration in the end – head over to the site and read about the concept of “test-movies” and what types of scripts they’re looking for.

So get started – there’s $165,000 in awards available for next month’s contest, and submissions are due by April 30th. Animators may want to aim for the $25,000 prize for Best Storyboard and if you’re interested, keep in mind that any storyboard test movie is also in the running for the overall $100,000 Best Test Movie contest. The guest judge for this upcoming April competition is from our end of the business – David Stainton, Former President, Walt Disney Feature Animation. And as a final note, know that the crowds joining these contests will only grow, so the sooner you enter, the better your chances are of winning.

Winning Team Reveals How Nightmares Are Made

The Rheo team that won the CGSociety B-Movie CG Challenge with their submission The Night of All Fears has revealed a comprehensive making-of video. The team, which used Flash and After Effects, was comprised of Cyril Corallo, Jonathan Erwin Malnoury, Emmanuel Briand and Gaëlle Rouby.

Goodman Animates Chinese Tale

Have a look at Yoni Goodman’s submission to Maratoon, the Israeli animation competition. Competitors had 5 days to create 30-seconds, and Goodman teamed up with Uri Inks to create Chinese Tale:
