Cross Sheds Light on Feature Project – Black Sunrise

Nick Cross isn’t waiting for his chance to make an animated feature film – he’s just going to make the damn thing! But first, he needs your help. By way of indiegogo, where he successfully raised the money for his short The Pig Farmer, he’s begun raising $25,000 towards the project, which is titled Black Sunrise. The trailer below looks rather epic:

Ramsay Spawns Sequence For Feature Documentary

Todd Ramsay, who you may know as the creator of Honkbarn, recently took part in a feature documentary project. One Big Hapa Family explores Japanese multi-racial marriage in Canada, and the stories of several couples are brought to life with animation. Here’s Ramsay’s Flash-animated sequence:

Siggi Orri Þórhannesson produced this Flash-animated title sequence for the 2010 Icelandic film titled Kóngavegur (King’s Road). It’s about a son’s homecoming that doesn’t turn out quite like he’d expected.

Chico & Rita – A New Toon Boom Feature Film

A new 2D feature film out of Spain is gathering some strong critical reviews. Chico & Rita is set in 1948, and we follow two music lovers through a worldwide love affair that stretches across Cuba, New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas. The project was rotoscoped at Lightstar Studios in Brazil using Toon Boom Harmony, and HoBSoft built the pipeline. The US premiere was held at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month, after which the Hollywood Reporter posted a glowing review, while somehow also slighting the plot as “paper-thin.” The 90-minute film was directed by Fernando Trueba, Javier Mariscal and Tono Errando and here’s the trailer.

Goodman Helps Birth The Edge of Joy

First 2 Minutes of the Flash-Animated Waterman Movie

As you might expect with an indie feature film, finding funding is half, or most, of the battle. Bryan Waterman has been baking his feature film, The Waterman Movie, for several years now, but he now has some footage to show. This release is part of a fundraising effort that already has Bryan $10,000 closer to his goal. The first two minutes of the film features the voicework of comedic genius Leslie Nielsen:

The Princess and the Frog Team Goes Paperless

With The Princess and the Frog DVD arriving in stores today, it’s high time we mention that Toon Boom was the technology of choice behind the Oscar-nominated feature. Much of the animation process was traditional (flipping paper and such), but the crew at Walt Disney Animation Studios used the enterprise-grade Toon Boom package Harmony to bring it to the screen. In fact, many of the Annie-Award-winning effects were “paperless” – drawn with a Cintiq right into Harmony.

Flash Animation Gets a Ticket to the Oscars

While the majority of Oscar-nominated feature The Secret of Kells was traditionally animated, there were a number of Flash-animated sequences in the film, as we reported here back in 2009. If you watched last weekend’s Oscar telecast, you may have spotted the segment featuring animated characters from all of the nominated productions, and I just discovered that the :18 second clip of Aisling, the woodland fairy from The Secret of Kells, was animated in Flash, frame-by-frame with the brush tool. Alessandra Sorrentino and Alfredo Cassano, two talented freelance crew members at Cartoon Saloon (who are also a couple), brought it to life. Huge congrats to the whole team at Cartoon Saloon!

Black Dynamite Animated End Credits are Funkadelic

Listen up, suckas! We finally got our hands on the Flash-animated Black Dynamite end credits. The live-action film, which opened in mid-October on 70 screens, is director Scott Sanders’ faithful send-up of 1970s Blaxploitation films (Dolemite, Super Fly), and the 90-minute project has received a strong critical reception. The producers turned to Six Point Harness to bring the action-packed end credits to life, but that’s not the end of the animated story. According to a recent interview with Sanders, the project is in the pilot phase for a series on Cartoon Network. We’ll keep you posted, ya dig?

Xombie Lurks Towards DreamWorks Deal

James Farr’s Flash-animated series Xombie is reportedly nearing a feature deal at DreamWorks. Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter leaked that the writing/producing duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are currently negotiating with Farr for the rights to the property, which has also been spun off as a graphic novel and a comic book. We’ll cross our fingers.
