Hong Kong-based Nutmeat Studios produced this striking PSA using Flash and After Effects. The team used what appears to be some rotoscoping techniques along with some more standard tweening effects. The PSA is titled Blood Wudu:

Here’s yet another solid short from Kilogramme which was commissioned by ViralFilms, who were after a Yogi Bear style. Claire Grey directed, Craig Knowles handled character design, while David Ridges managed BGs. The trio then animated in Flash together. The 1:30 minute piece promotes fire safety:

Birdo Team Animates Global Warming Short

Luciana Eguti and Paulo Muppet at Brazil’s Birdo Studio directed this new global warming short. It was submitted for a contest organized by the Brazilian environmental office, and it ended up winning the top prize. The short is titled Box:

Copernicus Unites Around Pinhead Project

Copernicus Studios was behind the animation on this new anti-racism short from The Pinhead Project. The cast includes Nelly Furtado and Chris Bosh, amongst others, and the 5-minute short illustrates how the daughter of pinheads can learn to not be such a pinhead. The Girl With Pinhead Parents aims to teach that “racism is hate. Hate is a learned behavior.” Copernicus’ Andrew Holland was the animation director on the short, and he was joined by animators Philippe Tardif, Joe Acorn, Tim Larade, Adam Gunn and Ben Durrel. Compositing and editing was handled by Juan Cruz Baldassarre and Murray Bain.

Paley Produces Short For the EFF

Nina Paley’s critically-aclaimed feature Sita Sings the Blues (100% on RottenTomatoes.com) will be screened at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco on July 20th to benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). In related news, the EFF is celebrating their 20th anniversary, and Paley was called upon to get the party started. She animated this short below that illustrates one of the issues the EFF fights for.

Lazenby’s Animation Treatment For Cancer Patients

How do you make cancer fun and interesting to children? Yikes – that sounds nearly impossible. Apparently Emma Lazenby (Mother of Many) wasn’t quite so doubtful, as you can see in this 5-minute educational film titled One of a Kind – A Guide to Radiotherapy. The often charming little film was designed and directed by Lazenby and animated by Alex Potts, Ginny Robertson and Matthew Walker. It was a co-production from both ArthurCox and Aardman Animations. (for those in North America – “radiotherapy” is otherwise known as “radiation therapy”)

Steve Scott Directs World Cup Spot

With the World Cup officially starting today, I’d like to point you to a new football-flavored animation. Not To Scale’s Steve Scott directed this new spot for FIFA’s 20 Centres For 2010 effort, which aims “to create 20 Football for Hope Centres to promote public health, education and football in disadvantaged communities across Africa.” It’s Flash animation mixed with live-action footage.

Kilogramme Weighs Benefits of Drug Use

The Manchester-based studio Kilogramme was recently called upon to educate us all about drugs. The upsides of Mephedrone, Ketamine and Cocaethylene all have a downside, and animations like this one below use a touch of humor to illuminate that point.
