Flash Animation Gets a Ticket to the Oscars

While the majority of Oscar-nominated feature The Secret of Kells was traditionally animated, there were a number of Flash-animated sequences in the film, as we reported here back in 2009. If you watched last weekend’s Oscar telecast, you may have spotted the segment featuring animated characters from all of the nominated productions, and I just discovered that the :18 second clip of Aisling, the woodland fairy from The Secret of Kells, was animated in Flash, frame-by-frame with the brush tool. Alessandra Sorrentino and Alfredo Cassano, two talented freelance crew members at Cartoon Saloon (who are also a couple), brought it to life. Huge congrats to the whole team at Cartoon Saloon!

Secret of Kells Books NYC Dates

Yesterday, over at lineboil.com we wrote about the upcoming The Secret of Kells screenings in NYC. The July 18th and 19th showings are part of the New York International Children’s Film Festival, and tickets are already available.

The film is primarily filled with traditional animation, but as we pointed out here in January, there are number of Flash-animated scenes in the film too. Here’s some Flash scenes that were animated by Alessandra Sorrentino.

Irish director Tomm Moore picked up a few awards the other night for his film The Secret of Kells. It was at the 11th Cartoon Movie event in Lyon, France where he snagged the Best European Director award, and Cartoon Saloon, the studio he and Paul Young founded in 1999, was dubbed Best European Producer. While it must be exciting, it’s possible Moore’s mind is somewhere else. You see, his next feature film is already under way. The trailer for Song of the Sea, which is also being produced by Cartoon Saloon, was revealed yesterday by Alessandra Sorrentino, who explains on her blog that clean-up on these shots was performed in both Flash and TV Paint. The Secret is Out On Kells Feature

Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation team behind Skunk Fu!, are finally seeing their animated feature to the screen. The Secret of Kells, co-directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey, will hit Irish cinemas on March 6th (distribution by Buena Vista International), and while most of the film is traditionally animated (long live the 2D feature!), there are a number of Flash-animated shots in the film. Italian Couple Work For Brennan’s Love

In the running for “most talented couple,” Alessandra Sorrentino and Alfredo Cassano are fond of traditional, frame-by-frame animation. The duo, based in Italy, are also fans of Flash, and in 2006 they combined to create a music video for the Irish artist Wayne Brennan. Sorrentino and Cassano directed, boarded and animated And I Love, which eventually aired on Channel 6, the Irish cable network.
