Animax Behind NBC’s Community Web Series

I’ve learned that Animax is the team animating the new Community web series for NBC. Three episodes will be available on Hulu starting today. It’s actually a single episode, titled Abed’s Master Key, told in three parts. Here’s a teaser:

Popzilla Ready To Premiere on MTV

Popzilla got an official premiere date the other day. MTV will begin airing the new Flash-animated series on September 28th at 6:30pm, and the show will air every day there after (Mon – Thurs). Yes, you read that right – a daily animated show. I’m getting tired just writing about it. Congrats Animax! Here’s a clip, featuring the lying President of the United States, Barack Obama. HEY! I meant “lying down.” Sheesh.

Variety Touts Topical Toon Technology

Variety’s Ellen Wolff has penned a new article that discusses the power of Flash animation. Animax Entertainment’s new series Popzilla is featured, pointing out how the software helps the team knock out 22-minute episodes in less than 3 weeks.

Flash-animated toons that lampoon topics ripped from the headlines are common on the web, but not so on TV. Thomas observes, “This show uses Flash the way it should be used, as opposed to using Flash to try and do cel animation. This is a digital tool that allows animators to build libraries of movement and reuse them, and this show utilizes that well.”

Animax also proved the production model for the pilot:

Brent Haynes, MTV senior VP of series development says that when Thomas pitched the show to him, he gave them three weeks to deliver a 6-minute test tape.

Animated Bob & Doug Episodes Online

Animax Entertainment’s Flash-animated series Bob & Doug, is reportedly scoring high ratings up in Canada, landing in the Top 10 shows on the network. The team at Animax probably isn’t watching though – they’re too busy on their next series Popzilla, a Flash-animated comedy for MTV that’s currently in production at their Van Nuys studio. Canadians can watch full episodes of Bob & Doug at globaltv.com, and the rest of us can see some on YouTube. Here’s the first third of episode 6, Bob Falls in Love. Bob & Doug Go Global on Sunday Night

New adult-oriented animation is popping up everywhere. Sit Down, Shut Up bows on FOX this Sunday, ABC’s The Goode Family kicks off on May 27th – and this Sunday, Canada will tune into Bob & Doug. The project was spearheaded by Animax Entertainment, who initially produced animated versions of the SCTV characters for the 2002 DVD release of Strange Brew. Seven years later, as the TV series rolls out, it goes to show you how determination can win out. The Flash-animated half-hour series premieres this Sunday on Global TV at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT, sandwiched between American Dad and Family Guy. Congrats, Animax!

12 Days of Christmas From Holiday Hosers

The merry animators at Animax Entertainment have prepared an early holiday gift for you and yours. Below is the animated version of Bob & Doug McKenzie singing the 12 Days of Christmas. The song originated on their 1981 Great White North album, which went triple platinum in Canada. Next month, the brothers will begin airing on Global TV in Canada in their first animated TV series – Bob & Doug. To see more – a trailer for the show is at the end of the song.

Flash Animation November News Round-up

You’ve got about 2 weeks left to submit your entry to the Aniboom Awards 3. The overall winner will receive a $25,000 investment in commercial development and a distribution deal with aniBoom. It looks like the top audience favorite so far is A Day in the Life, a Flash-animated film that was featured here this summer.

Calling all Canadian writers… Animax Entertainment has launched the Canucks Cartoon Script Contest. To be eligible for thousands in prizes, writers must submit a 7-minute script for an original concept. Writers will retain the rights to their scripts, and Animax big-wig Dave Thomas (SCTV, Strange Brew) will be presiding over the judging. Don’t like writing alone – team up with a writer and submit something together. Get crackin’ Canucks!

It’s not Flash-animation related, by my friend Yair Landau just launched a new animation project over at Facebook. Mass Animation kicked off today with a 5-minute, CGI-animated project titled Live Music that will be produced by animators around the world. Artists can download the story reel from over 100 shots and submit their take. The project is being produced in Maya, and Autodesk has provided a free trial version for those without a copy. Landau, a former vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and president of Sony Pictures Digital, is producing and directing.
