The gang at Birdo Studio in Brazil has employed Flash to bring a new video to life. All of the character animation in this throw-back style short, titled Black Thin King, was created in Flash, and directed by CISMA (Denis Kamioka). Animation direction was handled by Paulo Muppet and Luciana Eguti and the piece was animated by Muppet, Pedro Eboli and Rafael Gallardo. The video was created to promote OCB’s blackthinking.com site.
We’ve had an excellent response to the launch of the CHF Studio Directory, with nearly 100 studios and artists submitting profiles in the 2 weeks since it went live.
Some profiles are bare bones, while others take full advantage of the directory functionality. Birdo Studio, who are based in Sao Paulo, did just that, inserting their studio logo, a YouTube reel and their RSS feed so we can keep track of their artistic assault on the world.
For last year’s Brazilian Resfest event, Birdo Studio was called upon to bring the official festival poster to life. The Resfest team had commissioned Rafael Grampá to illustrate the poster, which featured a bird grasping an onion-like vegetable. The Birdo team, lead by animation directors Luciana Eguti and Paulo Muppet, then animated this promotional short below in Flash, and then Eguti composited the final assembly in After Effects. Animation was handled by Gustavo Teixeira and Rafael Gallardo.

Fons Schiedon, a designer/director residing in Amsterdam, recently partnered with the band Voicst on a music video. Feel Like a Rocket was directed and designed by Schiedon, and animated “traditionally” in Flash, set against backgrounds rendered in Illustrator, Photoshop and Maya. The project was completed in five weeks, thanks in part to the Sao Paolo-based team at BIRDO, who helped on the character animation front, much as they had on Schiedon’s 2006 13-episode run of Mobbed for MTV.
