Big City Birds Takes Flight

Two Flash-animation powerhouses, Vancouver’s Atomic Cartoons and Ireland-based Boulder Media (Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends and El Tigre), have teamed up on a new series. The Big City Birds promo will debut this week at KidScreen, the New York convention for kids entertainment creative executives, but in the meantime, we’ve been treated to an exclusive peak at the project.

Big City Birds was created by Ridd Sorensen, who works at Atomic Cartoons as a Supervising Director and runs Big City Cartoons. At the Vancouver-based studio, Sorensen has added his hand to shows like Atomic Betty and Captain Flamingo, both Flash-animated shows. Big City Birds centers on two birds and their animal buddies who live, well, in the big city. The show is targeted at the pre-school market (kids 4 to 6), and the show is aiming to hit the air in the Fall of 2008.

Besides teaming up with Boulder Media, Sorenson and Atomic joined forces with, amongst others, Jeff Agala, another director at Atomic Cartoons, and Jon Affolter, who provided Flash animation.

The series looks fantastic – gorgeous layouts, beautiful character designs and strong character animation. After KidScreen wraps, we’ll get the full promo up on CHF, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on these layouts.

The Wubbzy TV Debut

Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! premieres today at 11am on both Nick Jr. and Noggin. The 26-episode Flash-animated series is the creation of Bob Boyle, who also witnessed his other creation, Yin Yang Yo!, premiere earlier this summer.

The series is produced by Bolder Media for Boys and Girls (Fred Seibert and Susan Miller) and IDT/Film Roman. Two animation studios knocked out the episodes – Six Point Harness in Hollywood and Bardel in Canada.

You can enjoy the show on the web too. There’s the official TV site, the producer’s website, and the wubbcast site where you can see a short ‘How Its Done’ video (MOV) or a watch the latest podcast video (m4v or mov).

After today, the series will air at 11:30am on weekdays.

Wubbzy Looks Wonderful

Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! is coming to Nick Jr. in August, but you can currently catch a sneak preview over at nickjr.com. A music video is playing for those using Internet Explorer, and everyone can watch the Wubbzy promo over at wubbzy.com. The show is animated in Flash, and the above-mentioned music video was animated by Stanton Cruse of Six Point Harness.

The show is created by elves in a magical far-off land! Well, actually, they aren’t really elves, and the far-off land is Burbank, California. But it’s still magical! The real magic is that we create the show in a program called Flash. It helps us reuse animation elements in a really efficient way and allows us to achieve the really crisp clean graphic style that we were going for. But if you know of any out of work elves, please send them our way!

Wubbzy is being produced by Bolder Media, a company headed up by Fred Seibert and Susan Miller. The nickjr.com site will reportedly have something new up every Tuesday.
