If the coffee ain’t working, Olivier Brisson’s short, Les Amis, will surely do the trick. This jet-fueled romp sees two interloping friends pursued by a fiercely fanged foe. They zoom through clouds, the desert, a mountain top, while Un Canard’s 8-bit video game soundtrack keeps time. It’s the first short that Brisson has produced during his studies at Cégep du Vieux Montréal. He produced the project using Toon Boom.
Copernicus Studios was behind the animation on this new anti-racism short from The Pinhead Project. The cast includes Nelly Furtado and Chris Bosh, amongst others, and the 5-minute short illustrates how the daughter of pinheads can learn to not be such a pinhead. The Girl With Pinhead Parents aims to teach that “racism is hate. Hate is a learned behavior.” Copernicus’ Andrew Holland was the animation director on the short, and he was joined by animators Philippe Tardif, Joe Acorn, Tim Larade, Adam Gunn and Ben Durrel. Compositing and editing was handled by Juan Cruz Baldassarre and Murray Bain.

Canadian animator Shaz Lym displays why Flash animation has no bounds. This piece isn’t about software, or technology – it’s simply an animator with a vision. This “traditionally” animated action sequence is the first in a series of shorts Lym is intending to create. It’s called Mr. Fresh, and this initial installment is titled Purple Shadows, a reference to the box-faced badies. Lym is currently working at Cuppa Coffee.

Hot Couture is Lee Ann Dufour’s graduation film from her studies at Sheridan College. It’s a musically-driven, Flash-animated piece that relies heavily on production design and strong poses, as there isn’t an abundance of animation. Set 1,000 years in the future, we meet Geraldine and Coraline, who are competing for the title of Miss Divine 3050.
