For his Motion Graphics class at Savannah College of Art and Design, Nathaniel Milburn was challenged to enter a video in The Sparky Awards, using the theme of “Sharing Ideas.” The result is this charming short titled Lets brighten dark situations!

11 Second Club Kicks Dialog to the Curb

They’re keeping it fresh over at the 11 Second Club competition – keeping us on our toes. April’s competition featured an audio clip with no dialog – just sound effects. This resulted in a wide variety of interpretations in the 160 submissions. Taking 3rd this month was Matt Shepherd, who was the reigning champ. Watch his submission, then go get started on the May competition, which is already under way:

TAIS Hatches Chicken Jam

The Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) has launched their Chicken Jam event. Here’s how it works – create a 10-second animated film that incorporates the “chicken” theme, submit it to TAIS, and your short will be cut into a showreel that will be screened at the National Film Board in June. Visit the TAIS site for a submission form and further information. The deadline is May 29, 2009.

Animator Wins Christian Competition

As we mentioned back in February, the gang over at SplineDoctors.com launched a Christian Bale animation contest – challenging animators to bring his potty-mouthed rant to life. Ireland’s Chris O’Hara took the top prize with this Flash-animated version featuring Batman and a Fly Guy. [NSFW - naughty talk]

Hunger Destroyed By Animated Doritos

Over at the Australian Doritos website, a competition is underway. Hoping for the success of the Super Bowl campaign by their American group, Doritos and their agency, Clemenger BBDO, have arranged for a $20,000 prize for the best 29-second ad, and I spotted at least one Flash-animated submission. Here’s Destroy Your Hunger with Doritos, which was submitted by Franky, an animation student living in Brisbane. If you like it, go vote for him on the Doritos website (search for ‘Francis’).

Shepherd Finds Time for 11 Second Club

Mat Shepherd is no stranger to re-imagining Jack Black dialog. Back in January, we posted his 2-minute short titled Kick It that featured dialog from a Tenacious D album, and for February’s 11 Second Club contest, Shepherd added his Flash-animated take on one of Black’s School of Rock scenes. He placed 11th out of 182 submissions.

You’ve got about 2 weeks left to submit your entry to the Aniboom Awards 3. The overall winner will receive a $25,000 investment in commercial development and a distribution deal with aniBoom. It looks like the top audience favorite so far is A Day in the Life, a Flash-animated film that was featured here this summer.

Calling all Canadian writers… Animax Entertainment has launched the Canucks Cartoon Script Contest. To be eligible for thousands in prizes, writers must submit a 7-minute script for an original concept. Writers will retain the rights to their scripts, and Animax big-wig Dave Thomas (SCTV, Strange Brew) will be presiding over the judging. Don’t like writing alone – team up with a writer and submit something together. Get crackin’ Canucks!

It’s not Flash-animation related, by my friend Yair Landau just launched a new animation project over at Facebook. Mass Animation kicked off today with a 5-minute, CGI-animated project titled Live Music that will be produced by animators around the world. Artists can download the story reel from over 100 shots and submit their take. The project is being produced in Maya, and Autodesk has provided a free trial version for those without a copy. Landau, a former vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and president of Sony Pictures Digital, is producing and directing.

Doritos and Dye Crash the Super Bowl

Allan Dye, who won the MyToons contest back in September, is going for the gold again. Doritos has launched their Crash the Super Bowl contest, which encourages filmmakers to submit a 30-second spot that could end up airing during Superbowl XLIII in February 2009. Dye’s submission is titled Spicy Nacho vs. Giant Robot, and if you click the “play” button below you can watch it. If you like it, go leave a comment.
