Back in November of 2005, Cold Hard Flash interviewed Matthew Charde, the Executive Producer at Global Mechanic, the animation and live action production company in Boston and Vancouver. Well, since then Global Mechanic has done more than just re-launch their website. A show they produced called FETCH! With Ruff Ruffman recently received two Emmy nominations, they produced opening sequence for the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), and they’ve worked on tons of commercials.
For instance, Bruce Alcock directed two spots for the Province of Alberta titled Eat and Move, which were both hand-drawn in Flash. Working with the ad agency DDB, Charde exec. produced the spots along with Paul Boyd, who acted as director of animation.
A new Flash-animated series premiered yesterday on PBS KIDS GO! The show is called FETCH!, and according to the press release, it’s “part game show, part reality TV, and part spoof, FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman features real kids, real challenges, real science, and an unreal animated host - a dog named Ruff Ruffman. The series mixes unscripted live-action with animation, and breaks the mold with its educational and comical take on America’s newest television genre.”
The show is produced by WGBH Boston and 20 first-season episodes were animated by Global Mechanic, who are also based in Boston. Matthew Charde, the executive producer at Global Mechanic, was recently interviewed here at CHF.
WGBH Boston has been behind Flash animated shows before – ‘Peep and the Big Wide World’ and ‘Between the Lions,’ which, not unlike ‘FETCH!,’ includes Flash animated elements mixed with live-action.
