Grootfontein Gives Birth to a JibJab Piñata

Rossi and Timms Release Project Gouken

Paris-based artist and Gobelins grad Laurent Rossi directed this Street Fighter homage, and brought in Matt Timms, an FX animator on The Amazing World of Gumball, to handle the FX animation. They used Flash, Photoshop and After Effects. Pretty insense stuff! Enjoy Project Gouken:

French Animators Take Ice Cream Road to Annecy

3 buddies, 1 ice cream van and a road-trip for the ages. Ice Cream Road is a 5-minute film directed by Frenchmen David Decobert, Thomas Fourniret and Jean-Philippe Florin for the Annecy 2011 YouTube Contest. The theme this year is Animation, Land of Freedom, and artists are encouraged to include a reference to the USA, who are the 2011 guest country. I think this one has a strong chance at taking the top prize:

Fadera and Guellai Deliver Mo’Sam Experience

EMCA students Mohamed Fadera and Sami Guellai directed this animated short, titled Mo’Sam Experience. What is a Mo’Sam, you ask? That’s the collaborative team name Fadera and Guellai have hung on themselves, and this “experience” is more of a teaser for a longer piece they’re already working on. As you’ll probably notice, Flash was just one of the tools they used in the production. Maya, Photoshop, Flash and After Effects were all utilized on this graduation year project.

Leger Brings Rahan To Life in Flash

France’s Nicolas Leger produced this intense, fx-heavy, traditionally-animated sequence for the Xilam TV series Rahan during his 4 years of employment at the studio. He animated primarily with Flash but he also used After Effects for compositing and effects.

Bill and Gobi Animate Zblucops Trailer

Our friends at Catsuka tipped us off about a new Flash-animated project emanating out of France. It’s a comic book trailer for the latest issue of Zblucops, a property created by Bill and Gobi (Benoit Boucher and Baptiste Gaubert). The two had animation help from Balak, Fafah Togora and Fabien Mense.

Flash Animated Film From France – A Big Boy

Over 3 years ago, we posted a clip from Louis de La Taille’s Flash-animated short Un Grand Garçon (A Big Boy). This 4:30 minute short follows a young boy who is on the verge of becoming a young man, in more ways than one. Trondheim and Tanguy Pilot New Series Test for Markus

Lewis Trondheim, the creator of the 2002 Nickelodeon series Kaput and Zösky, has launched another project. Markus is the latest creation from the prolific French cartoonist, and to bring this 2-minute, Flash-animated pilot to life, Trondheim teamed up with Jean-Matthieu Tanguy of Magenta Production. In this form, it’s not fit for a young audience, but it sure is a great looking show.

Ubisoft Builds UBIart – Flash-like Software For Games

Developers at Ubisoft in France have hatched a new animation tool called UBIart, that focuses on “interactive creation.” It’s a proprietary tool, and the fact that they’re promoting its existence makes me think they’ll offer it to the public at some point. With user-generated content invading the video gaming world (like LittleBigPlanet), it would make sense, especially in light of Ubisoft’s announcement of ManiaPlanet, a “user-powered” game coming later this year. UBIart appears to work like Flash – or probably more like Toon Boom – allowing the user to import any medium and then animate using rigs.

The artist working the tablet here is Christophe Villez, a graduate of Gobelins, and his work is then animated by Anthony Le Du.
