Brothers Chaps in the News

posted by aaron, 7.25 AM

AWN.com posted a new piece about the Brothers Chaps, the duo behind the online phenom Homestar Runner. Catching Up with Homestar Runner by Karen Raugust notes that the Flash-animated series Strong Bad Emails has been put on hiatus after the 200th episode. But according to the article, that doesn’t mean the brothers have stopped animating:

“The content is more varied now,” says Mike Chapman, who founded the site with Craig Zobel in 2000. “Before, at least 60% to 70% of the updates were Strong Bad Emails, but now it’s sort of a mixed bag. It’s a little more fun for us.”

The article also points out that the economic downturn has hurt their business, which relies heavily on DVD and t-shirt sales. I think it was a smart move to release a less expensive Strong Bad Emails DVD with 50 of the best episodes for $10. Should increase sales, me thinks.

The Chaps were also highlighted in a new book by Scott Kirsner, titled Fans, Friends and Followers: Building an Audience and a Creative Career in the Digital Age. Here’s a quote from Mike Chapman:

We learned how to politely say no to things that were going to affect our lives negatively. If it’s going to be fun, if we’re going to enjoy doing it, and if the end project is going to be something we want to have happen, we say yes.

Flapjack Homage Was Meant to Be

posted by aaron, 7.11 AM

An 2317-year old animator, who goes by Kevin L., created this “fanimation” that blends two animated projects into one. The visuals are obviously from The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, but the song, It’s Like It Was Meant to Be, is sung by Strong Bad from Homestar Runner. Kevin had help from his friend Larsan artist on fansite flapjackfan.com. The clip is titled K’nuckles in Meant to Be.

The song can be found on the fourth disc of the Strong Bad Emails DVD.

Last week we reported on the new Homestar Runner Wii game Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People (SBCG4AP), which is due out in June. While the game series, which is being produced by Telltale, doesn’t feature any elements created in Flash, it’s fun to follow the growing empire that was spawned from one of the first Flash-animated hits to start on the web. So we turn to the source for answers – the Chapman brothers, Mike and Matt, who have answered a few questions about this much anticipated game title.

AARON SIMPSON: The question always seemed to be “why not turn Homestar into a TV series?” Is a platform game a more natural evolution for you guys?

CHAPMAN BROTHERS: I think so. Video games have always been a big part of homestarrunner.com – from visuals, to music, to the actual games on our site. And the WiiWare download service also seems to fit with the way we do things.

AARON: Was SBCG4AP in motion before you created the Viidelectrix Wii game page (which features games designed for the Internet Channel of the Nintendo Wii)?

CHAPMANS: No. We had made the Viidelectrix page several months before we heard from Telltale.

AARON: It seems like every Nintendo platform has appeared in some form or another in the Homestar universe, so this game only makes sense. But had you two discussed a Homestar Runner platform game in years past?
