Sook-Yin Lee, the host of CBC Radio One’s Definitely Not the Opera (DNTO), has said that in her family “stories were traded like currency.” The latest currency she’s bartering with is animation. Three Canadian animators have been handed a short audio segment to bring to life, and below is Jon Izen’s film titled True Love.
You can see the other films in this series on YouTube.
Valentine’s Day is Saturday, and as the old saying goes, “love is in the air.” Scientifically, I believe those are called pheromones, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that Jon Izen has released a special valentines episode in his series of Flash-animated super-shorts called Black and White. This is titled Love Hurts.
Back in 2006, we highlighted a web series from Jon Izen, the co-creator of Yam Roll. Black and White is an obtuse, acquired taste – with a polarized audience. Viewers appreciation of the series is as opposite as, well, black and white. Izen has recently landed back at the animation desk to create more, and his recent short takes on the recent presidential inauguration. Love it? Hate it?
If you’ve followed CHF for a few years now, you’ll know that we’re nutbags about Jon Izen’s stuff – in particular Yam Roll (created along with Jono Howard and Dan Sioui) and Black and White. So you can imagine our excitement when we got wind of a new project, again created with March Entertainment. Princess Mimi and her Tiny Bud Grumpy Gus is the brainchild of Howard and Izen, who also designed and directed. Ivan Rusev added his animation skills to the mix, and voila – a brand new series concept has emerged. Whatdyathink?
The series is titled black and white, and it features Izen’s zany brand of absurdity, and lots of it. Izen has created fist-fulls of these shorts, and with a production team that consists of him, a microphone and Flash, it’s no wonder. My personal favorite changes with each day, but I’m Glasses is currently hitting my sweet spot.
Also notice that full Yam Roll episodes are now available for online viewing.
