After challenging the conventional album distribution system last Fall, Radiohead has turned its attention to how animated music videos are produced. On March 17th, the band announced that it had teamed up with Aniboom and Adult Swim for a groundbreaking music video contest. The concept of a user or listener-generated music video contest goes back to Madonna and MTV’s 1986 Make My Video competition, but when a band of Radiohead’s size is paired with the connective possibilities of the internet, we’re likely to see uncommon results.

Those results will arrive in 4 stages, starting with the April 27th deadline for the storyboard submission round. In this initial phase, animators, writers and other artists can submit a clip displaying their concept for a music video – using any song from Radiohead’s #1 album In Rainbows. The field will be subsequently whittled down to 10 semifinalists, who will each be awarded $1,000 to make a 1-minute music video. These 10 are culled to 5 finalists, whose work is then presented to the band.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke

Finally, on June 30th, the winner will receive $10,000 to make a full version of their video (complete schedule and rules)

The 4-step process is a clever approach to the ever popular world of user-generated content, or UGC. It lowers the bar for entry, allowing artists to dip a toe into the contest without committing a month of their life to a submission that may not even make the finals. It’s actually an analog of the traditional method employed at major animation studios: concepts are presented, a rough pass is produced and then the final work is revealed to scrutinizing executives. Only here, the “executives” are one of the coolest bands in the world.

And while we know Radiohead for their progressive approach to the music industry and their unique blend of sonic experimentalism and alternative rock power, they know a thing or two about music videos. Jamie Thraves’ music video for Radiohead’s 1995 track Just is often listed amongst the best music videos of all time, and another three, Fake Plastic Trees, Karma Police and Street Spirit (Fade Out), have received similar acclaim. Their music videos are simply legendary. It’s enough pressure to make an animator freeze up in fear.

So to help get the ball rolling, Aniboom partnered with the dynamic animation duo comprised of Jon M. Gibson and Gabe Swarr. The two were tapped to create a promotional and inspirational animated short (below) which would accompany the contest announcement.

You may know Gibson from i am 8-bit, the video game themed art exhibit that has now spawned a popular book, but he’s also a sought-after screenwriter for studios like Disney and Nickelodeon.

Swarr’s resume goes back to Spumco, where he helped pioneer the online Flash animation movement, but he has since made a name for himself as a director and storyboard artist on animated TV series like El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. The two have been collaborating for years now, but this is by far their biggest experiment. Over a million online views later, the two have to be pleased with how their promo short turned out, but let’s take a look at how that all came together.

Both Gabe and Jon joined CHF in an interview – the first in a lengthy series of Aniboom/Radiohead pieces we’ll be revealing over the next few months.

AARON SIMPSON: Gabe, you mentioned on your blog that this piece deviates from your natural style. Did you draw from any sources to discover this new look?

GABE SWARR: Actually, when we were first talking to Aniboom, they mentioned “realistic” and “photographs” and I immediately didn’t want to do it. It just didn’t interest me at all. I thought this thing was going to be bad and really couldn’t wrap my brain around it.

So after Jon convinced me “we should at least try it,” I put it out of my mind, and tried not to think about it for a while. I try to do this as much as possible, and then let the idea come to me naturally. My friend Ricky calls it “unloading.” The idea actually came to me in a dream a couple days later. I woke up early in the morning and jotted down the concept.

Information Graphics
by Peter Wildbur & Michael Burke

As far as the look is concerned, I really like anything incredibly graphic, be it sprites from videogames, ads, maps, or even graffiti. A couple of years ago I bought this book called Information Graphics filled with diagrams and maps and instructions. In there was a really cool looking medical diagram of how to use an ICU. That mixed with some subway maps, and some cool textures I came across and the look was born.

AARON: So much of your work is in the comedic direction, was it refreshing to “play it straight” on this one?

GABE: This one was like a giant experiment. I always like to try new things, but a lot of times, they are just too crazy. I remember I sat down with Matt Gadbois (our expert After Effects compositor), and explained what I wanted to do and he just couldn’t figure it out. Maybe I just didn’t explain it too well.

The whole thing was a big gamble. We were on a VERY compressed schedule and to try this many new things at once was a formula for disaster… but we did it. If we had more time, I would have done a lot more in 3D. But I had to restrict it for the time allowed.

AARON: The video seems like a heavily stylized metaphor for the contest – idea, creation and distribution. Was that your vision?

GABE: Yes, exactly. Someone gets inspired by music, and creates something. The video is about the journey that the inspiration/music takes through your body. The actual path was from the headphones, to your ears, fills your brain with ideas, it goes to your heart for the meaning, you eyes for the vision, and finally your hands for the conduit to the world.

AARON: Do you personally find music artistically inspiring?

GABE: Of course! I love to listen to music with my eyes closed. I’ve done that since I was little. I think that every genre of music has really powerful imagery which usually has nothing to do with what they are actually singing about.

AARON: The lyrics to Bodysnatchers hint at being trapped inside one’s own body. Did you lean on any of the song’s lyrics for inspiration?

Concept Sketch by Gabe

GABE: It kinda fell together actually. The concept came first and then I heard Bodysnatchers. It was a natural fit for the idea. The song drove everything from the look, the feel, and especially the timing. I broke down the lyrics, tempo, and the beats, and then tracked everything to that. In my opinion, all the best music videos are made that way.

I have to say, I love doing music videos. I would never pass up a chance to do one. They are so much fun to visually represent something completely non-visual. I had the same approach when I did the i am 8-bit opening (below) and Fuck Her Gently for Tenacious D.

AARON: Did you create an animatic before diving in?

GABE: Of course, they are deadly essential and I never work without them.

Gabe’s animatic

AARON: And what decisions are made during the animatic phase?

GABE: Usually there are very few changes from storyboard to animatic, but this time I got a good chunk done and started the animatic right away. After it started coming together, I went back and boarded the rest and then finished the animatic. The board and animatic were both done in a day. A very long day.

AARON: I’m guessing that wasn’t the only long day – it looks like some elaborate masking was employed in this video. Was that all produced in Flash?

Early video concept

GABE: Yes, some crazy tedious masking went into this one. I did all the animation in Flash. Every shot was then composited in After Effects, like the process used on El Tigre.

AARON: With so much directing lately at Nickelodeon, do you get to animate much anymore?

GABE: Well, I’ve been recruited to do a lot of the Flash animation fixes for El Tigre. I’m slowly getting back up to speed. I love to animate, I think it’s one of the most rewarding parts, but the setup and prep work in Flash takes so stinking long.

AARON: Is this tedious process something you see technology fixing down the road, or is it just the nature of building digital art?

Parenting functionality promised
for next version of Flash

GABE: I think with the new parenting function of the new Flash might help, but I think it’s just the nature of the beast. If you want to keep everything really efficient and well organized, it takes some time to set it up right.

AARON: What’s it like collaborating with Jon?

GABE: I love working for Jon because he really trusts me. He leaves me alone to get stuff done, which is the best kind of Producer. I’ve had so many experiences where I spent more time explaining things than the actual time it took to finish those things. He’s really good at dealing with the client too. Jon does all the back and forth and I don’t have to deal with it.

Gabe’s El Tigre design

I think it’s kinda the same working relationship that William Hanna and Joe Barbera had. Joe would go out and take meetings, pitch and sell, and Bill would sit at the studio and run it. It worked for them for decades.

One more amazing thing about Jon is that anyone that knows him, knows that when he comes up with an idea to do something, usually it’s happening within a week if its conception. There’s something not right about that boy. He must have made a deal with the devil. Well, at least that’s one client Jon can deal with by himself.

Jon M. Gibson

AARON: Speaking of Jon, let’s turn our attention to Mr. Gibson. I’m going to start with a non-question. This is a pretty incredible opportunity for an animator…

JON M. GIBSON: I’d like to start with the opposite of a non-question: How sick are you of people saying you got into animation because you have the last name Simpson?

AARON: It was either cartoons or pop songs, but Jessica won’t return my calls. Back to the question – opportunities like this don’t come along every day; can you put this one in perspective amidst all the other online UGC projects out there?

JON: The biggest difference — users don’t have to submit a final, polished, over-the-top, “wow”-a-second video. It’s merely a presentation piece. You create a storyboard, and then move onto the next step. Aniboom recognizes that making a music video isn’t easy — not one bit — so expecting one user to produce the holy grail of awesome vids without many resources… well, that’s just silly. What this contest allows for is a step-by-step process, as ANY other production would be run, starting with the most important element of all — the storyboard. That’s the road map for the entire storytelling process, and at least from our perspective, story and character are king, and both of those are made or broken in the storyboard process. If something isn’t working right, it’s much easier to tweak it on a storyboard than in an animatic or after animation has started. So with this contest, users can actually get feedback while still advancing to the next round. Maybe something worked amazingly well, while this other little element didn’t — the judges will have enough foresight to see that potential.

AARON: Were you a fan of Radiohead prior to landing this project?

Jorge Gutierrez

JON: If you ask our pal Jorge Gutierrez, the ridiculously multi-talented co-creator of El Tigre, not nearly as “big a fan” as he is. We had to come to terms with this before accepting the project — because we knew if we disappointed Jorge with this particular video, our fate would feel something like drowning in a bathtub filled with tequila.

But, dude — of course. What’s the point of having your own studio if you can’t work of stuff you actually want to work on? Gabe and I vowed from the very beginning to only take on projects that we had a passion for. Sure, sometimes we don’t like something outright, but our gut says there’s something cool about it. Your gut’s usually always right. It’s like when you see a girl and there’s just that “thing” that attracts you to her, but you can’t… quite… put your finger on it.

I feel like I drifted from the question a bit. So, anyway… Karma Police was heard on many carpools to high school my sophomore year. My buddy Pat did dig the Radiohead quite a bit. Made those cold Michigan mornings a bit more tolerable, ‘cause he had holes rusted through almost every inch of his car. That sucked. But I gotta say — “Optimistic” from Kid A is my favorite Radiohead song. It’s one of those songs where I get so caught up in the music that I could never actually recite the lyrics for you — it’s got such a fucking fantastic mood.

AARON: Any word from Jorge? He must have seen the video by now.

Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi

JON: This is why I love Jorge — he deliberately issues “challenges” of sorts. He knows exactly how my brain works, as well as Gabe’s. He knows that if he prods us a little we will strive that much harder to impress the hell out of him. He did that to me in 2004 when I said I wanted to do an art show about 80’s videogames called i am 8-bit. He said I was biting off a lot more than I could chew. And everything he said was right — it was hard as hell — but because he said that, I wanted to do it more. Same thing with the Ralph Bakshi book. A lot of people said we (my co-author Chris McD) were crazy — that we’d probably start but never finish. No one else was stepping up to the plate, and we knew the book had to exist. To have the privilege of chronicling someone’s legacy — that’s motivation enough.

At the same time, I really like to see how close friends react to any project. Whether it’s writing a book or a script or showing off a finished video like this — whether the reaction is good or bad — your close friends are the only ones that are going to be totally honest. My mom is never going to tell me she hates something. I can’t speak for Gabe, but I think we both value our inner-circle screenings tremendously. This is where the rawest opinions are spoken, whether we agree with them or not. When doing ANYTHING in a creative field, it’s important to have that kind of feedback system. I never want to be insulated to the point where I’m not asking other people’s opinions about EVERYTHING I do. It’s like driving drunk.

AARON: Did you guys have the choice of any track from In Rainbows?

JON: Yeah, we had carte blanche of any track from the album, and Bodysnatchers was an instant standout. It has energy — a pulse. And if you listen closely to the lyrics, everything syncs amazingly well to the visuals. But that’s also the awesome thing about this Aniboom contest — anyone who enters is given the same choice of any track. That makes judging exponentially more difficult, but that’s the fun of it, right? — seeing how varied the results will be. It’s always cool to see how hundreds of different artists interpret something. No single idea is God.

AARON: What kind of turn-around time were you looking at for this kickoff piece?

JON: Well, we had a lot less time to complete our video than everyone else entering the contest will have. It was a rodeo of a schedule — about two weeks. That meant a lot of late nights, but the response we’ve gotten has made it so worth it. Though, none of us would ever recommend this tight a schedule for any production. It hurts. You sweat. It’s always nice to sit back, put something away, and get a chance to breathe. When you look at it again, it’s with fresh eyes — and a fresh perspective.

Breaking down the track

This is often times a luxury that just isn’t realistic in the production pipeline, but as an artist, you should always try to take that breath. And man, it’s all about having a killer crew. Gabe and I just work naturally well together, and special props must be given to the brilliant Matt Gadbois for headlining the heavy After Effects work.

AARON: Can you point out which elements in the video were built by Matt?

GABE: Every camera move and transition was recreated and perfected in After Effects by Matt. At one point, he didn’t like the way it was turning out so he gutted the whole setup and re-did the entire first half. He’s great! I love to work with perfectionists that aren’t crippled by their own obsessions.

JON: Like Gabe mentioned, all the animation was done in Flash, but the rest of the video was assembled, composited, and pieced together like a really intricate puzzle in After Effects. The animated character layered over the live-action footage, plus the motion-control on the jostle of each step — that’s Matt. The color treatment on the rainbows flowing through the body — that’s Matt. So many integral aspects of the video — like the many layers of subtle but incredibly effective visual filters — were all Matt. And he did so much more than that. He was often the last guy in the office, because he had to do final outputs. Basically, Matt rocks. Matt fucking rocks! He’s an incredibly integral part of the team, and has been indispensable to our other friend’s productions as well, especially with Jorge’s projects like his pilot at Disney, Pepe the Bull, El Tigre, lots of great stuff with the awesome Dave Wasson, and so on.

AARON: Was the band involved in any of the creative details of your video?

JON: The band had total concept approval, but gave us complete freedom to explore that concept. Gabe came up with a really cool way to visualize the idea of how an artist might be inspired by music. It’s such an abstract concept that figuring out an idea to illustrate that “inspiration” wasn’t easy. In fact, there were a few failed concepts that we immediately flunked when we discussed amongst ourselves. After some debate, finally — it was fleshed out. Using the Bodysnatchers track, we used bits of the visual design of the album — stark blacks and whites with washes of rainbows. We pitched that to the band and they didn’t disagree with a single word. This is an amazing thing — artists trusting other artists to do what they do best is how some of the coolest projects come to fruition.

It’s something that Ralph Bakshi always did so well — hiring guys for their own personal style of art, then making that work within the context of the story he wanted to tell. Dudes like Barry Jackson, Peter Chung, Ira Turek, James Gurney, Thomas Kincade, and so many others were graduates of that technique. He trusted his guys to run wild. That’s why Gabe and I are such good friends — he’s not afraid to just roll with it, experiment, flex those creative muscles. It’s when you get totally comfortable as an artist that it’s probably time to retire. I want to learn something new every single day until I die.

Gabe and his Mario collection

You know why I really like Gabe? He doesn’t exclusively watch Tex Avery cartoons and drool. He listens to Devo, electro-clash, and always has a new obscure song for me to listen to. He watches TV shows and movies while he works — Mr. Ed, the Coen brothers, anything Tezuka. He reads lots of graphic novels — American and Japanese. He scours the internet every day for… stuff. Just cool, interesting stuff. He plays lots of videogames, old and new. The dude has the biggest collection of Mario merchandise I’ve ever seen. That’s why we get along — we’re both incredible media whores, and know that inspiration ultimately doesn’t come from guys doing the very same thing as you (like animation), but from all that other wonderful stuff out there.

This past Friday, my wife and I attended the 35th Annual Annie Awards, which were held on the UCLA campus for the first time. As you may have read here a few months back, it was a proud night for Flash animation.

The big winner at Royce Hall was undeniably Pixar’s feature film Ratatouille – which wrapped up 10 awards. On the TV side, two series took home a pair of trophies – Robot Chicken and Nickelodeon’s Flash-animated series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. The show, which was created by Jorge Gutierrez and his wife Sandra Equihua, walked away with awards for Best Animated Television Production for Children and Character Design in an Animated Television Production, a category Gutierrez was nominated for two years ago. Congrats to Dave Thomas, Tim Yoon, Gabe Swarr, Roman Laney and the crews at Boulder Media and Six Point Harness. [read Cold Hard Flash interviews with Gutierrez and Yoon]

El Tigre was also nominated in two other categories:

Monica Kennedy for Character Animation in a Television Production

Shawn Patterson for Music in an Animated Television Production

Below is one of the El Tigre clips Patterson submitted for the awards. Its from episode 9, titled Yellow Pantera.

Sadly, it looks like this award-winning show will be ending this year, but it will surely go out on a high-note. Nickelodeon hasn’t picked up the second season, and as Patterson put it on his MySpace page “all great things come to an end.”In the Best Animated Television Commercial category, Acme Filmworks’ Powershares spot, titled Escape Average, took top honors. This weekend, I asked Dave Wasson, the director of the commercial, about the ceremony and production experience:

When Patrick Warburton announced that our Powershares spot had won I was completely caught off guard. At past Annie Awards, I’d been nominated quite a few times, but had ever won. So I had sort of given up on the idea of taking home a trophy. I tried to get Ron Diamond and Gwynn Adik to join me on stage but they wouldn’t budge (they’d decide to give me “my moment in the sun”). I hadn’t written anything down so I gave a short, rambling thank you speech and staggered off stage.

The schedule on this spot was crazy; three weeks total from the time I got the outline from the agency until the day we delivered the finished spot. That said, of all of the projects I’ve directed, it was actually one of the most fun. I really clicked with the agency creatives right from the start, and they were completely open to me taking their idea and running with it (incidentally, in case any agency executives are reading this, this is the best recipe for good commercials – I’m just sayin’). Dave Knott and I completed the storyboard in two days. The following day I made the animatic. Using Flash I was able to create the character designs and backgrounds in record time.

Even though our crew was small, they were super talented, which made it all the more enjoyable. I contacted Brendan Burch at Six Point Harness Studios and he hooked us up with a couple of his best guys. Saharat Tantivaranyoo did a beautiful job with the character layouts, and James Krenske’s animation is kick ass! Back at Acme Filmworks, I worked with Nic Mermet on After Effects to composite all the elements together and add all of the multi-plane parallax. All in all, it was really a great experience.

[Watch Wasson's Powershares commercial here at Cold Hard Flash]

Back at the Annie Awards, Flash animation continued to echo throughout the night. The creators of Flash, Jonathan Gay, Gary Grossman and Robert Tatsumi, were honored with the Ub Iwerks Award, which highlights excellence in technical achievement. I won’t go into much more detail on this, as a we’ll be posting a lengthy interview with all three guys tomorrow.

But in the meantime, here’s a clip that played just prior to their award. It’s a collage of various Flash-animated projects from the last 10 years. Antran Manoogian, the president of ASIFA-Hollywood, asked me to assemble the clip, and I was happy to oblige. It’s simply a hint at all of the great Flash animation out there – we surely left out some incredible projects. Thanks to Antran for the invitation, and to Les Perkins for helping me put this together.

Alongside John Canemaker and Glen Keane, John Kricfalusi accepted his Winsor McCay Award, which honors “career contributions to the art of animation.” John K’s The Ren and Stimpy Show was credited with “reinvigorated television animation,” but he was also noted for his pioneering work on the internet’s first cartoon series – The Goddamn George Liquor Program, which was animated entirely in Flash.

There were also a handful of nominees on Friday representing Flash-animated projects:

BEST ANIMATED SHORT SUBJECT
Chip Wass’ short Mascot Prep – part of Disney’s Shorty McShorts’ Shorts project – animated at Boulder Media

ANIMATION PRODUCTION ARTIST
Natasha Liberman – Growing Up Creepie – Discovery Kids

BEST ANIMATED TELEVISION COMMERCIAL
Esurance Homeowners spot – W!LDBRAIN

BEST ANIMATED TELEVISION PRODUCTION FOR CHILDREN
Little Einsteins – Disney Channel
Peep and the Big Wide World – Discovery Kids

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate my cousin, Elizabeth Harvatine, for her nomination in the Character Animation in a Television Production category. She was honored for her stop-motion animation on Adult Swim’s Morel Orel, and her pal Eric Towner took home the trophy for his work on another stop-motion project – Robot Chicken. (inset photo credit – Tennessee Reid Norton)

On the eve of Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, there is some sad news to report from the Flash animation front. El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera has been canceled. While I haven’t seen any official news yet, I spotted two RIP notes on a pair of blogs, including one where I grabbed this image.

This series, created by Jorge Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua, featured an all-star crew that included Roman Laney, Dave Thomas, Gabe Swarr, Ben Jones, Ricky Garduno, Fred Osmond, Luke Cormican, Tod Polson, Katie Rice, Ray Morelli, Gerald De Jesus, Aaron Horvarth, Katrien Verbiest, Eddie Trigueros, Chris Battle, Sean Szeles, Steve Lambe, Tim Yoon and many others. From what I’ve heard, the crew has been plowing forward on a short 2nd season order, but it looks like the axe has fallen. The series pushed the boundaries of what Flash is capable of – with heaps of action scenes and kinetic, lush environments. Heck, it was perhaps the first Flash-animated series to get high marks from Cartoon Brew’s notoriously tough-critic Amid Amidi.

In keeping with Day of the Dead tradition, we shouldn’t mourn the end of the road, but instead celebrate a fantastic series. I’d love to read comments from fans and friends of the crew – as I’m sure you agree with me: El Tigre is an exceptional series. Congratulations to the entire team.

At the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, I attended the 5th Annual Pitching an Animated Show panel, which was again hosted by animation writer/creator Jon M. Gibson. The panelists covered topics that I’m sure many CHF readers are interested in (myself included), so I took some notes and will regurgitate here.

Heather Kenyon, the senior director of development of original animation for Cartoon Network, said that a good pitch should have strong characters – the type that could hold our attention in an episode taking place in an empty room. Kenyon said her studio has even optioned a show after seeing only evocative drawings of characters in action – displaying their personalities with crystal clarity.

This type of advice sounds obvious, as Eric Coleman, VP of Animation, Development & Production at Nickelodeon, pointed out, but they assured us that unique, vivid and likable new characters are hard to find. The mantra repeated by all panelists seemed to be “know your characters” and avoid the common trap of the main character being the least interesting one in the bunch. Again, this sounds obvious, but Jill Stewart, manager of Original Series at Disney Channel Animation, said that she hears many pitches where the lead character is introduced as “just a regular guy.”

Kenyon also added that a good exec will be reviewing you as well as the pitch. Knowing that you’ll be a pleasant person to work with goes a long way for these buyers, especially when you consider that development can take 2 or even 3 years. This is exactly how long it took to launch Nick’s El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera which was created by Sandra Equihua and her husband Jorge Gutierrez – also a panelist at the event.

Other words of wisdom heard on the panel included:

Write complete episode synopses – don’t just set up the story and cop out with “and the gang has to get out of another jam.”

Eric Coleman offered another seemingly obvious thought – that if you’re pitching a comedy your pitch should be, well, funny. The development execs on the panel said that they hear countless pitches claiming to be “funny like The Simpsons” but unless you can illustrate that in the room, they “won’t buy the show to see if that’s actually the case,” said Kenyon. I couldn’t agree more – and feel that if you’re not the type of person who makes your friends laugh, you might want to team up with a writer who does. My good pal Heath Corson, a talented comedy writer, could read the want ads in the pitch room and leave the meeting in stitches (ironically the same reason he doesn’t need to read the want ads).

There seems to be an inverse relationship between the level of pitch bible “frills” and the quality of the idea. Meaning that if your pitch pack for a treasure hunter show is delivered to a studio locked inside an elaborate chest of gold coins – you should have spent less time mining eBay for miniature treasure chests and more time ensuring you’ve created unique, likable characters. And aim for a low page count – six or seven pages.

Know both who you’re pitching to and what the network is broadcasting. If you’re not up to date on their current slate, take in some episodes or at least read some synopses on tv.com or similar site.

Gutierrez suggested that getting a job in the industry is a great way to grow towards a successful pitching career. He claimed to have been turned down in hundreds of pitch meetings before he and his wife Sandra cracked through with El Tigre. Coleman chipped in adding that he personally watched Jorge’s pitches improve over time – so stick with it and invite feedback from your friends.

It was also suggested to those outside of California that you pick up stakes and move to LA. Not exactly what you want to hear as you’re readying your pitch materials out in Vancouver or Austin, and I’m sure there’s plenty of success stories that offer hope to those outside of the LA bubble.

Don’t pitch your “baby” that’s been slowly crafted over the last 7 years – something Mike Moon, VP of animation at Disney Channel cautioned against. Gutierrez likened the pitch process to a battlefront – fearless pitching of concept after concept while your ideas are bombed into submission along the way. Bottom line – if you have one idea, you might just want to make that one yourself.

If you have access to the network execs, ask what they’re looking for (see below). Or wrap up your meeting with a chat about their current “wants.”

On that note, I’ll list out what the three represented studios are looking for, which tends to change a bit from year to year.

Nickelodeon – Eric Coleman said they’re looking for comedy and kid heroes with breakout personalities. He said the ideal show will have kid or kid-like characters – ala Spongebob, who flips burgers (a first job) and is seeking his boating license (driver’s license).

Cartoon Network – Heather Kenyon is after 6-11 boy-skewing shows, both action-adventure (think Ben 10) and comedies (think Camp Lazlo) alike. CN is also launching a Primetime block filled with animated sitcoms – like an age-appropriate Simpsons. Some will be live-action, some animated, while others will feature a mixture of both. For more insight on Cartoon Network’s development plans, check out this great post on Fatkat’s blog.

Disney – Mike Moon kept his needs short and sweet: gender-neutral, kid-relatable and no action shows.

I encourage anyone mentioned above to correct or elaborate on what I’ve written, as I paraphrased a bit. And remember that these “rules” are broken en route to success, but it can’t hurt to soak this info in before embarking on a pitch tour.

I spent two days at Comic-con in San Diego this past weekend, and witnessed one of most intense people-crushes I’ve ever seen. Ticket sales were actually halted on Saturday, with attendance estimates ranging from 125,000 to 150,000, up from 104,000 last year. As you can see in the photo below, the concept of a ‘personal space bubble’ was hard to come by.

I was hunting down as many Flash animation names as I could, and using this event as a barometer, I can safely say Flash animation is a healthy industry. I met:

- One of the founders of independent animation company Net Hat Co
- the two chiefs of Titmouse Studio, Chris and Shannon Prynoski who premiered Metalocalypse
- Bob Boyle, who showed an episode of upcoming Jetix show ‘Yin Yang Yo!’
- George Elliott, founder of Elliott Animation, who are animating ‘Yin Yang Yo!’
- Jorge Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua, the creators of Nickelodeon’s ‘El Tigre’
- Tom Fulp (photo) of Newgrounds and The Behemoth, who was showing of his new 2D platform game ‘Castle Crashers’
- Brooke Burgess, whose ‘Broken Saints’ series is out on DVD August 1st
- The guys behind ‘College University’ and ‘Dr. Shroud’

I’ve also posted about 20 photos from my San Diego adventure over in the Message Boards.

We’re back with the second edition of Cold Hard Council. The first focused on Flash’s reputation in the industry and today, we’re asking…

Have you or your studio made the move to Flash 8?

We use 7.2, but not by any choice of mine. With it’s new undo function it’s probably my most unliked version of the bunch. For my projects I use 4. It feels the most comfortable and animator friendly to me.
–Mike Geiger, Animation Director, ‘Yam Roll’

We have not. We usually wait until the software has had time to flood the market and all of the kinks get worked out. I am looking forward to having it in our studio.
–Craig Hartin – Animation Supervisor, Radical Axis, ‘Squidbillies’

Yes we have. I initially played around with the Flash 8 demo and found it lackluster. Feeling disappointed that after all the feelers that were put out into the industry by Macromedia to get feedback from artists and animators that our suggestions were completely ignored. Having now worked in Flash 8 for several months, I still feel the same way, but have grown to enjoy some of the new features as I’ve appled them into our projects. For example all the layer blending modes make for some neato “photoshop-esque” backgrounds as you can see a music video for Microsoft, produced by Tony Grillo of Flinch Studio and Fatkat Animation Studios.
–Gene Fowler, King of the Litter Box, Fatkat Animation Studios

We have moved to Flash 8. It’s a definite improvement from MX2004 and there are a few more artist friendly features. Video capabilties have gotten way better and I’m already looking forward to Flash 9!
–Evan Spiridellis, Head Art Guy, JibJab Media Inc.

No, I use Flash MX.
–Matt Clark, Founder, Manbaby Studios

Yes and it was a big dissapointment.
–Jorge Gutierrez, Creator, ‘El Tigre’ (Nickelodeon 2007)

We have not made the jump to Flash 8. A couple of the guys have downloaded the trials and we have seen little bugs that resemble all early releases of Flash. For example – when bringing in artwork from Illustrator, some fills will fall out, and drops certain custom brush strokes. In addition, some of our projects require collaboration with freelance artists or occasionally overseas studios. We must be sure that everybody we collaborate with is able to work with us without losing a beat due to software incompatibility.
–Brendan Burch & Dave Vamos, Founders, Six Point Harness Studios

We’re still hanging on to Flash MX like fools. Creatures of habit, I guess. We sadly have our unopened boxes of Flash 8 collecting dust in our supply bin.
–Roque Ballesteros, Founder, Ghostbot

Yes, we made the move. As we find ourselves getting into a lot of emerging digital media, Flash has become a very malleable tool. I think it’s crucial to stay current with the program. Skipping versions is like cramming for a test. You don’t want to be working on a deadline and all of a sudden learning new tools.

Who says creativity can’t happen by committee? Today marks the beginning of a new feature called Cold Hard Council. It’s a roundtable that taps into the minds of some of the more prominent names in the Flash animation community. Each time we convene here for the Council, we’ll tackle a different question, and you’ll see new names pop in and out as this feature unfolds. The envelope, please….

Question #1: Do Flash-animated projects still get a bad rap in the animation world?

I think so. If not for the simple reason that most animators fell in love with the golden age of cartoons, and Flash is known (fairly or not) to be unable to duplicate the quality and life that made those cartoons great. I think the common industry conception is that if it’s a Flash show, it can be
produced quick, cheap, and easy. Which is probably true in part, but this is also the constraint that keeps it looking that way. What made animation great 30 years ago are the same things that make animation look good now. Unfortunately, it seems Flash shows are budgeted to look like Flash shows, so it can be a tricky challenge to balance the quality of the animation you’d like to produce with the deadlines that are expected by a Flash production.
–Mike Geiger, Animation Director, ‘Yam Roll’

I don’t think that they do. Animation has taken a turn from traditional cel animation to new mediums. I don’t think that it is good or bad – just different. People need to understand that this software is bringing animation back into the US. So much work used to be sent overseas and now we have a way to get things done quicker and more cost effectively here. When we began to animate ‘Squidbillies,’ we were trying to find a way to make it stand out. We all knew that we wanted to try something new. Scott Fry, Radical Axis CEO, and I began talking about traditional and vector. We looked at several ways to make it new and fresh, including drawing all of the art into Illustrator. At that point we just decided to dive head first into making it a Flash animated show.
–Craig Hartin – Animation Supervisor, Radical Axis, ‘Squidbillies’

Here in Canada I believe that it’s all over and done with; Flash isn’t synonymous with lesser quality anymore. Also, in recent travels overseas and all over North America, Flash is becoming more then just another medium, it’s now the medium of choice. Flash is just ‘“the way’” now. Which is great!
–Gene Fowler, King of the Litter Box, Fatkat Animation Studios

I think so but it’s only because most people are unaware of all the amazing work being produced with Flash. Or maybe they know the work and simply not know that it’s a Flash-produced program or short. All someone has to do is visit this blog to see the amazing range and quality of work that is being created with the software. Flash, like anything else, is just a TOOL. Give it to a talented artist and they will figure out how to make great work on their own. That’s when it stops looking like it came out of a can.
–Evan Spiridellis, Head Art Guy, JibJab Media Inc.

It seems like they do a little. But it also seems like producers are feeling like they should learn a little more about it, like it might be worth it to finally consider Flash as a real animation tool.
–Matt Clark, Founder, Manbaby Studios

Hell yeah! But definitely changing. The fact that ‘Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends’ and other Flash shows are constantly getting nominated and winning awards is helping. And some studios (Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) are starting to spend healthy traditional 2D TV budgets on Flash animated series and the results are speaking for themselves. To me, that’s the key. Don’t spend less and expect more.
–Jorge Gutierrez, Creator, ‘El Tigre’ (Nickelodeon 2007)

I think Flash is slowly coming out of the shadows of “dotcom shame.” One reason is that there are a number of recent shows from each of the major animation studios that have tested and proven the viability of Flash, particularly in TV production.
–Roque Ballesteros, Founder, Ghostbot

No, I don’t think so anymore. Around 2000, the majority of cartoons on the internet involved poop or stickmen fighting. So for awhile, Flash was definitely looked down upon in Hollywood. The publicity of the dot-bomb era certainly didn’t help. People thought that the idea of using this tool for broadcast was crazy based on their 30 second exposure to the technical and aesthetic limitations of the web. But history does repeat itself. When 3D first came out, it was very crude and looked extremely mechanical. The guys programming the algorithms had very little sense of timing, movement or acting. The software was very clunky. As the software got into the right hands, all those principles began to evolve with technology. Flash has gone through the same development process in the last 5 years. You now have studio talent harnessing Flash and applying all their knowledge into a new technology.
Keep your eyes peeled for news on Jorge’s new show ‘El Tigre,’ which was recently green-lit by Nickelodeon. I managed to see a version of the Flash-animated pilot, which he co-created with his wife Sandra Equihua, and it was simply stunning. Think Fosters-level animation in an action show. I got the chance to work with Jorge on his first project out of school – ‘El Macho.’ I knew then that it was just a matter of time before he landed a series or two. I’ll start my groveling now to see if I can get a still image of ‘El Tigre’ for CHF.
