COLD HARD FLASH
Flash Empowers

The boys at Ka-Ching Cartoons have been mighty busy, churning out a new kids show titled De Grobbebollen Maken Lol (in Dutch “lol” rather appropriately means “fun”). It’s in Dutch, but there’s plenty of physical comedy that translates into any language. [might need Silverlight to view this]

[UPDATE] I learned from Joost at Ka-Ching that they’re making 52 five-minute episodes over 2 seasons. They’re also working with artists from around the globe like Mick Harrison, Jesse Cote and Todd Ramsay

I’ve always got my eyes on projects that are “in the oven.” Many animators and animation teams use the web to tease a project that’s still in production, and I’ll spot an animatic or a blog post about these, and track them to completion. Right now I’m watching several, but three in particular have got my full attention.

First up is Kyle Marshall’s The 3 Amigonauts: Doin’ the Doo. Last year, Marshall brought us Triumphant Campaigns of Captain Cudney, which really blew me away. Below is the first shot from Amigonauts, which he designed and colored in Photoshop, but then assembled in Flash.

Last summer we posted 3 “behind-the-scenes” vignettes for Ka-Ching Cartoon’s 7-minute Flash-animated short The 3D-Machine, which was produced in stereoscopic 3D. This week, Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk, the Nethlands-based founders of Ka-Ching, have delivered a detailed, step-by-step “how to” video. Below, we learn how to produce the anaglyph images that create the illusion of 3D, using Flash and After Effects.

Back in January, we wrote about Ka-Ching Cartoon’s Flash animated short 3D Machine. I’ve now seen the 7-minute film, and Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk have created an extremely unique short, and the process by which they created this eye-popping 3D experience is equally as unique. Below we start with the trailer for 3D Machine, and then we’re treated to 3 “making of” shorts. [3D-glasses optional]

The 3D MachineLast night at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk, the Dutch artists behind Ka-Ching Cartoons, debuted their new 7-minute Flash-animated short The 3D-Machine. Inspired by 50s monster movies, this film is actually produced in traditional 3D format (glassed encouraged, but not required), and the team used Photoshop and After Effects for the backgrounds and Premiere for the editing. The film is about “a professor who invents a machine that can bring everything he draws to life.”

You can view a trailer over at the Ka-Ching website.
