I’ve always got my eyes on projects that are “in the oven.” Many animators and animation teams use the web to tease a project that’s still in production, and I’ll spot an animatic or a blog post about these, and track them to completion. Right now I’m watching several, but three in particular have got my full attention.

First up is Kyle Marshall’s The 3 Amigonauts: Doin’ the Doo. Last year, Marshall brought us Triumphant Campaigns of Captain Cudney, which really blew me away. Below is the first shot from Amigonauts, which he designed and colored in Photoshop, but then assembled in Flash.

[video temporarily removed]

Next, we have a new project from Ka-Ching Cartoons, the Nethrelands-based team behind The 3D Machine, another stand-out from 2008. Their next project is a half-hour animated film titled Kakkerlak: A Nuclear Opera. Here’s a 30-second sample:

Lastly, you should keep your eyes trained on the Brothers McLeod blog. The twosome, who were recently nominated for a BAFTA, have embarked on their latest film titled The Moon Bird, which is being written as an homage to the Brothers Grimm. No animation has emerged, but we’ll surely let you know when it does.

I recently watched the entire 4-minute, Flash-animated film, which is still touring the festival circuit, and thoroughly enjoyed his tale of a lovelorn Captain on the uncharted seas, in search of his abducted lover. Marshall, who holds a character design job at Mercury Filmworks on shows such as Gerald Mcboing Boing and Jimmy Two Shoes, worked on the film for about a year and half, according to a recent Metro News article. Below you can view a :50 second trailer for the film, which we promise to show you in its entirety when it becomes available.

Rita Street is an undeniable mainstay of the animation industry. A former publisher of Animation Magazine, Rita is the founder of Women In Animation, a board member of ASIFA-Hollywood, exec-producer for Nelvana’s Ruby Gloom and Cartoon Network’s Hero:108 and she’s perhaps best known as the founder of Radar Cartoons, a boutique animation consultancy firm. With all of this on her plate, Street recently found the time to direct her own animated short. Mock ‘n Boyd: Get Outta My Tree is a concept that’s been bubbling inside her since high school, and after teaming up with co-director Chris Dainty, this many-feathered project finally took flight. Here’s an exclusive sneak peek:

[MEDIA=100]

This homage to classic WB cartoons drew from Street’s fascination with a particular music video. Actor Christopher Walken showed off his dancing chops in the Fatboy Slim music video Weapon of Choice, and this same rhythmic enthusiasm shows up in the short.

Street and Dainty pulled together an all-star crew to bring the short to life. Kyle Marshall helped with storyboards and design, Lauren Andersson joined Dainty, who heads up Dainty Productions, on the animation front while Gerry Dushimen managed clean-up. Street was especially thankful for Dainty’s collaborative efforts, “I was so lucky to find Chris because he has a fantastic sense of timing and camera set-up, which really shows through in the final product.”
