This Friday, January 18th at 7:30pm (ET/PT), Cartoon Network (US) is premiering the first episode of the new Flash-animated series George of the Jungle. The show was co-produced by Classic Media, Teletoon Canada and Studio B Productions, who also physically produced the project. According to a recent New York Times article, Cartoon Network picked up 52 11-minute episodes, which will air in half-hour blocks in the above-mentioned time slot. For those who remember the original series that Jay Ward produced back in 1967, you’ll recall this was also a primetime show.
Below is the title sequence followed by a short episodic clip.

Fans of the groundbreaking 1982 Disney film Tron will get a kick out of this. Ron Doucet at Collideascope dug up some clips from their 2002 work on Teletoon’s series Ollie’s Under the Bed Adventures (now Olliver’s Adventures), and is using the material in his Flash animation class to teach special effects. The episode he chose from the series sees Olliver get sucked into his PC, where he’s dumped into the Tron universe. Here’s a few clips (no audio):
Head over to Ron’s original post to see heaps of model sheets, more effects clips, and if you watch closely you’ll also see a reference to the video game classic Q*Bert.[link]
Fatkat, the 120-strong animation studio in New Brunswick, Canada, has just announced their inclusion in The Detour on TELETOON Pilot Project. Debuting in the Fall of 2008, the pilots are aimed at playing alongside Teletoon favorites like Robot Chicken and Tripping the Rift.
Fatkat’s submission, Space Knights, is an animated parody of superhero shows from the 90’s like Disney’s Power Rangers. The Fatkat blog explains that the series would follow “the misshapen adventures of the crime-fighting team who must battle bickering and in-fighting almost as much as the external foes they face.”

Over in the CHF message boards, I’ve posted my intentions to overhaul the Wikipedia ‘Flash animation‘ post. It’s woefully in need of repair and updating, and I think we’re just the community to take care of this situation. For starters, let’s figure out the timeline for Flash-animation on broadcast television. Why does this matter? To know where we’re going in our ‘paperless 2D’ industry, we need to know where we’ve come from. This is a great opportunity to cement the history of the rapidly-growing digital 2D medium.
In my mind, this first list should include any type of Flash animation on TV. This would include TV series, TV commercials, interstitials and even title sequences. Below is what I could come up with, but I’m expecting plenty of revisions and additions to this:
