Fernanda Ribeiro just graduated from the Vancouver Film School, but no before producing this Flash-animated short. Cup of Tea is a 2-minute piece about a young girl who will try nearly anything to revive her frozen grandmother.

Barone’s Student Short – Tough West

Here’s Henrique Barone’s latest film from his studies at the Vancouver Film School. It’s titled Tough West, in which you’ll see Barone’s very firm grasp on background layouts, composition and color. A critique I’ll toss in – the short isn’t quick on the draw. We linger too long on the opening shots, and don’t keep the pace throughout. But a solid film – congrats, Henrique!

Gadea Sheds Light On His VFS Graduation Short

Luis Gadea was so ready to wrap up school, he produced two graduation shorts. Here’s his second, titled Wait for me under the lamp post. He animated in Flash during his studies in the Classical Animation program at the Vancouver Film School.

While this Flash-animated short from Ross Klettke moves at a somewhat glacial pace, I think it’s cut just right. The slow burn, set against the excitement of the crowd builds the gag. The Celebrity is Klettke’s year-end short from his studies in the VFS Classical Animation program.

A Few Friday Toon Boom Shorts

I’ve been recommending the animation software Toon Boom to a few friends lately, mainly because they asked about X-sheet timing, texture brushes or advanced camera functionality. Adam Phillips, the creator of the Brackenwood series, has already discovered the power of Toon Boom Digital Pro, and I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for other artists who have too.

Take a look at Grille Cheez, a 2-minute short by Mathieu Choquet, who produced this film in his final year at Cegep du Vieux Montreal.

And here is To Kill A Working Bird, a traditionally animated short produced at VFS about a homeless bird with a huge appetite. The short was created by Corey McDaniel, who was featured here back in 2007.

Lastly, if you haven’t used the software, have a look at the multiplane potential exhibited in this demonstration.

In the end, it’s the artist, not the software, that makes the difference, but knowing what options are out there can improve your creative execution.

Pedro Produces Pug’s Life

Vancouver Film School’s animation program recently said goodbye to Pedro Eboli. But before he left, Eboli took 2 weeks to learn how to use Flash, and in the following 2 weeks he created this short below, titled A Pug’s Life. Congrats on graduating, Pedro!

Ridge Animates For Political Progress
