COLD HARD FLASH
Flash Empowers

Last week we reported on the new Homestar Runner Wii game Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People (SBCG4AP), which is due out in June. While the game series, which is being produced by Telltale, doesn’t feature any elements created in Flash, it’s fun to follow the growing empire that was spawned from one of the first Flash-animated hits to start on the web. So we turn to the source for answers – the Chapman brothers, Mike and Matt, who have answered a few questions about this much anticipated game title.

AARON SIMPSON: The question always seemed to be “why not turn Homestar into a TV series?” Is a platform game a more natural evolution for you guys?

CHAPMAN BROTHERS: I think so. Video games have always been a big part of homestarrunner.com – from visuals, to music, to the actual games on our site. And the WiiWare download service also seems to fit with the way we do things.

AARON: Was SBCG4AP in motion before you created the Viidelectrix Wii game page (which features games designed for the Internet Channel of the Nintendo Wii)?

CHAPMANS: No. We had made the Viidelectrix page several months before we heard from Telltale.

AARON: It seems like every Nintendo platform has appeared in some form or another in the Homestar universe, so this game only makes sense. But had you two discussed a Homestar Runner platform game in years past?

Borutski Stars On All Girl Team

posted by aaron, 10.23 AM

An all-star team of animators took on a recent promotional campaign for a new online games website. Allgirlarcade.com is a project initiated by Fuel Industries, an Ontario-based Branded Entertainment company. The site is now host to All Girl Star Squad, a new gaming property featuring “a trio of female videogame champions who are recruited by a rag-tag team of aliens to help fight against a deluded fire queen.” The site will feature games, a “mall,” networking and webisodes. Hopefully they all look as beautiful as this clip below. Jessica Borutski designed the characters, which were brought to life by Jamie Gallant and Max Chiasson. Ben Reynolds added background designs and props, while Scott Dobbs helped on the painting front.

Happy Tree Friends Video Game Teaser

posted by aaron, 9.01 AM

As discussed here in May of 2007, a Happy Tree Friends console game is due out this year. Slate for a Spring 2008 release, SEGA’s Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm game will be available for Xbox 360 and for PCs by way of digital download. The game leads, which include series co-creator Kenn Navarro, Sega producer Martin Caplan (inset) and writer Ken Pontac, have been posting regularly to a blog about the production of the game. Below is the latest game teaser.

In other Happy Tree Friends news, it is being reported that the Russian government has put pressure on 2X2, an adult animation network to pull the Flash-animated series off the air for being too violent. And I thought the US media was up tight.

Swarr Gets Credit For King of Kong

posted by aaron, 6.44 PM

If you missed King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters last year in theaters, you should seek out the DVD, which is being released on January 29th. This documentary about a pair of Donkey Kong experts fighting for the all-time high score is both inspiring, hysterical and heartbreaking.

The DVD is shipping with a handful of featurettes and a bonus short titled A Really, Really Brief History of Donkey Kong, which you can see below. It was written by I Am 8-bit’s Jon Gibson and directed by Flash-pioneer Gabe Swarr, a Spumco vet with heaps of TV animation experience at Warner Bros. Animation, Disney and Nickelodeon.

The VO was provided by El Tigre voice actor Eric Bauza and the character design was led by Swarr and Steve Lambe. Tony Mora (another Spumco vet) provided the animation and the After Effects artistry was handled by Matt Gadbois.
